what do you tell them when they are all like "sports are pointless... it isn't like YOU are out there playing it, so why do you care who wins?"
i usually say something about how it draws on our basic insticts about wanting to belong to a group of people who are more likely to survive... in a way, sports is a show of which group is more physically talented and which group will be more likely to get all the food they need, all the land they need, etc. 2/4/2006 3:29:55 PM |

tell them to fuck off
or you could say "its fun"
you dont even need a reason, they aren't going to agree with you
thats like saying to someone who watches American Idol, why do you watch American Idol?
they're response is "because i like it" most of the time
and then i just have to deal with them being a moron

the problem that i see with people that say they don't like sports is this; there has to be some kind of physical activity out there that suits them. Whether it be an obscure sport like curling and the sport where you ski and shoot, to something totally off the wall like extreme scrabble, where you play on top of a mountain or on the edge of a cliff. 2/4/2006 9:48:19 PM |

well i have a glaring argument that negates the sports are pointless argument. look at the 1980 US Men's Olympic Hockey team. the miracle on ice. at that time the U.S. and it's people had fallen on hard times. we were coming out of the gas crisis. there was the inept President Carter who failed miserably at getting the Iran crisis hostages out, and the economy wasn't fairing so well. Americans weren't feeling very patriotic at the time. then out of nowhere these college kids beat one of the biggest powerhouses in sports history. that one game, and the team going on to win the gold medal against Sweden brought much joy and made everyone proud to be an American again. the 80's became a time of prosperity, and all was well.
i'm not saying that that game caused us to become prosperous in the 80's. i'm just saying it was a good way to kick start the new decade, and had a considerable impact on the American people.

sports give people something hopeful to put their faith in... sports give people something larger to identify with... and sports give people something commune over, something to bond over...
if someone says that, point out those things, and say that if sports are pointless after doing all of that then so is music (which does the same thing), religion (which does the same thing), and a myriad of other things they might consider "important" 2/5/2006 8:42:46 AM |

i am a firm believer that if you are not a fan of sports, you would have been one of the people to have been killed by a predator back in the day. i seriously think that sports pick up on an instintual urge for your "group" to become dominant over other "groups" in order to get the resources that are necessary for survival... much like war. 2/5/2006 10:24:15 AM |

im dealing with for the first time in my life a roomate that is absolutely ignorant when it comes to sports. Which is fine...i guess to each's own...although the manhood thing as mentioned before always comes in question. It just irkes me when im all into a game, like today against maryland, he sits their and finds the whole scenario amuzing. You know the type...the whistle blows and he sarcastically screams offsides during a basketball game. Constantly asks dumb questions in a manner that you can tell he knows the answer, in order to be a "funny guy". He's also the guy that ridicules the 210 lb. qb for running out of bounds to avoid a possible season ending hit from a 255 lb. coke snorting linebacker, because, "he's a pussy, a real man would have took that hit". Then proclaims...thats why i dont follow sports. 2/5/2006 4:33:33 PM |

I don't know about the rest of you, but sports has taught me a lot of lessons that I have applied throughout life. First off, in all sports, you must look towards the future, set a goal, work towards it, and hopefully accomplish what you were aiming towards despite the constant struggles and roadblocks that you might endure. Your education, career, life, and relationships work the very same way. By getting involved with sports at a young age, I learned this philosophy and I'm sure many of you did too. Therefore, my theory is that we (sports fans) relate back to this philosophy that we learned so early in our lives, and as a result, we love sports! 2/6/2006 10:20:01 AM |

I like to go to Carter Finley on a chilly October night and stand their as the crowd slowly files in and the energy steadily builds towards kickoff. I like the mass of people united for a single cause, cheering fellow humans towards a goal. I like how, if only for a few brief hours a week, I can go someplace and participate in something intense, something I can be passionate about, with other fellow fans.
Anyone who can experience that and come out saying that sports are pointless, is missing passion, missing some key part of their soul. 2/9/2006 9:15:10 AM |

to me sports are a virtual realization of my competitive side.
i am competitive, and enjoy participating and observing that which is competitive.
dudes that don't like sports are harder to figure out.
my sister is totally non-competitive and doesn't really watch sports, although she often asks me "who won". my mom on the other hand really gets into it. she'll start cursing and yelling.
my ex-girlfriend didn't watch sports, but she was competitive as hell. she was even competitive in our relationship--she pretty much could not leave her capitalist ethos out of our relationship (whole other thread). 2/9/2006 12:49:23 PM |

i guess i'm missing some part of my soul then. i've been to plenty of games and i enjoy them. but it's entertainment. plain and simple. there's nothing life-changing about these games (besides maybe a player or two who might go pro or get hurt or something). You guys need to lighten up.
and for the record, the important things in my life are usually things in which i'm actively involved, not living vicariously through a sports team.2/9/2006 1:59:51 PM |
