"Research by an acclaimed US psychologist suggests that 80 per cent of men who are homophobic have secret homosexual feelings.

This finding lends scientific support to the long-standing speculation that those who shout the loudest against homosexuality have something to hide.

The research results were published in the prestigious Journal of Abnormal Psychology, with the backing of the American Psychological Association.

In tests conducted by Prof. Henry E Adams of the University of Georgia, homophobic men who said they were exclusively heterosexual were shown gay sex videos.

Four out of five became sexually aroused by the homoerotic imagery, as recorded by a plethysmograph . . . a calibrated band fitted around the penis, which measures any enlargement."

Not really, no.

But I imagine this is going to spark an argument or two.

The psychologist's study raises some questions:

what percentage of non-homophobic men are aroused by those videos?

Is there a discrepancy between the amount of pornography watched by homophobes vs non-homophobes?

You know, I had one of those attached to me once... at least that's what the guy in the alley called it. I did kinda wonder why a scientist was in that alley. hmmm

Homophobes should force each other to undergo this test.

so this appears to be the study
http://www.oogachaga.com/downloads/homophobia_and_homosexual_arousal.pdf

but it's from 1996. I guess maybe it was just now published?

edit - yeah that's the case.

btw there's apparently an "index of homophobia" published in 1980 by hudson and ricketts which is what this guy went by, so i think that he's talking about the clinical homophobia - acutal fear of homosexuals - not people who hate gays. just for clarification

so while it would be funny if it were true, it just doesn't make sense if he was saying that men who were raised to hate gays are 80% likely to be gay themselves because of it or anything. it'll be spun that way, but that's not what hte study shows.

I'm guessing it was more scientific than that, and I'd bet the actual study will show that it was if you read it, but as I said above ^^ they're using the clinical term homophobia, not talking about people who have religious problems with homosexuality

you know, this is probably a little unfair

arousal through the watching of sexual activity, even if homosexual, is probably more a function of body response to the situation around us then actual desire

that is if we believe that sexual activity is going to take place around us, the body gets ready, even if we have no real desire to engage in the activity

also, there is probably some primative responses to dominance activities through sex in males

this is not the same as homosexual desire

^^^ right, but the point is, it's fashionable to mock psychiatry these days, not psychology. you brought up psychiatry out of nowhere, as this thread is about psychology.

You must not know many engineers.

It's been fashionable to mock psychology for as long as the science has existed. Psychiatry is just what the loony Scientologists mock; they're the medical doctors of psychology.
