"James and Sarah Brady Comment on the Vice President's Hunting Mishap

2/12/2006 5:40:00 PM

To: National Desk

Contact: Peter Hamm of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, 202-289-5792

WASHINGTON, Feb. 12 /U.S. Newswire/ -- James and Sarah Brady made comments today related to Vice President Cheney's reportedly accidental shooting yesterday in Texas.

"Now I understand why Dick Cheney keeps asking me to go hunting with him," said Jim Brady. "I had a friend once who accidentally shot pellets into his dog - and I thought he was an idiot."

"I've thought Cheney was scary for a long time," Sarah Brady said. "Now I know I was right to be nervous."

Ahahaa, I think this is funny as shit. But the way I read it, neither one of them was following anything close to safe hunting practices.

Way to go Cheney, shoot us in the foot why don't you?

^^That's funny as shit too.

why are most headlines related to this using the term "peppered"

50 pellets of bird shot from a 28 gauge at around 20-30 yards is not getting peppered its getting SHOT.

I'm surprised he was using a 28 guage... that's a small and unusual guage. I have one, they're hard to find shells for. Oh well I guess a 12 would have given him a heart attack.

^^ahahaha...

Yeah, probably because they try to create a political windfall with things like this so they can land more votes instead of focusing on the issues.

But it's not like either party wouldn't do it given the situation. Sigh.

I don't know how to feel about this story. I hear he "sprayed this dude in the chest and face with shotgun pellets." What's a shotgun pellet? Is it a bullet? Does it hurt when you get shot in the face with shotgun pellets? I need to see the wounds to know if this is a big deal or not. And what's this about "spraying"? I thought, you know, you see the bird, you train it with your rifle, and BAM! you kill it. One shot, right? That's how they do it on Monarch of the Glen. Or is it, like, one shot that bursts into lots of pellets?

How safe can we actually be? Are some of these rules and procedures in place to develop the illusion and comfort of perfect safety?

^No. That is why I asked.

I've shot a rifle before but didn't learn much. Still don't know what it means to get "sprayed with shotgun pellets in the face and chest."

mootduff, there are some gun enthusiasts on this board who would actually enjoy sharing their knowledge with me. Like, as I was typing the questions, I actually thought to myself, "This is cool. Maybe someone who normally doesn't have much to say will finally get to talk as an informed authority."

as mootduff was demonstrating with the graphic, there is a fundamental difference with how shotguns and rifles work - they're not synonyms as many people think - they are complete different kinds of guns.

A rifle like you shot, and is what's commonly thought of when one says "gun", uses a single casing and a single bullet. You pull the trigger, a hammer hits the casing, stuff happens, and one bullet is shot out. So you have to be precise when you shoot a rifle. That's why you don't shoot birds with rifles - they are very hard to hit.

A shotgun, though, uses lots of pellets, or "shot", instead of a single bullet. When the pellets are ejected out of the barrel, the natural tendency is to spread out, and therefore cover a larger area than a single rifle bullet. Shotguns can be extremely deadly at relatively close range - they'll blow a whole through you and make a huge mess. But at long range, the pellets spread out, and they also slow down more because individually they are much smaller and lighter than rifle bullets. So the 28 gauge that Cheaney was using has small pellets, and not many of them (compared to, e.g. a 12 gauge), so they are not deadly to a human from more than a few yards (if they are deadly at all besides point blank range to the head. I dunno.).

"The more than 18-hour delay in news emerging that the Vice President of the United States had shot a man, sending him to an intensive care unit with his wounds, grew even more curious late Sunday. E&P has learned that the official confirmation of the shooting came about only after a local reporter in Corpus Christi, Texas, received a tip from the owner of the property where the shooting occured and called Vice President Cheney's office for confirmation.

The confirmation was made but it is not known for certain that Cheney's office, the White House, or anyone else intended to announce the shooting if the reporter, Jaime Powell of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, had not received word from the ranch owner.

One of Powell's colleagues at paper, Beth Francesco, told E&P that Powell had built up a strong source relationship with the prominent ranch owner, Katharine Armstrong, which led to the tip. Powell is chief political reporter for the paper and also covers the area where the ranch is located south of Sarita, about 60 miles from Corpus Christi. Armstrong did not notify reporters at larger papers in Dallas, Houston, Austin or other cities."

"Just hours after Kerry shot a goose during an early-morning hunt in Boardman, Ohio, near Youngstown, the vice president told supporters in another part of the state that the outing was nothing more than a photo opportunity to hide the four-term Massachusetts senator's record.

Kerry supports the right to bear arms but has backed the assault-weapons ban and background checks at gun shows. He denies the Republicans' contention that he wants to take away guns from owners.

Cheney said Kerry's camouflage jacket was "an October disguise — an effort he's making to hide the fact that he votes against gun owner rights at every turn."

"My fellow sportsmen, this cover-up isn't going to work," Cheney said, speaking to supporters in an upscale Toledo suburb that borders the Ohio-Michigan state line. "The Second Amendment is more than just a photo opportunity.""

btw, about this "hunting"

Quote :
"Monday's hunting trip to Pennsylvania by Vice President Dick Cheney in which he reportedly shot more than 70 stocked pheasants and an unknown number of mallard ducks at an exclusive private club places a spotlight on an increasingly popular and deplorable form of hunting, in which birds are pen-reared and released to be shot in large numbers by patrons. The ethics of these hunts are called into question by rank-and-file sportsmen, who hunt animals in their native habitat and do not shoot confined or pen-raised animals that cannot escape.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported today that 500 farm-raised pheasants were released yesterday morning at the Rolling Rock Club in Ligonier Township for the benefit of Cheney's 10-person hunting party. The group killed at least 417 of the birds, illustrating the unsporting nature of canned hunts. The party also shot an unknown number of captive mallards in the afternoon."

Quote :
" Tex. Penal Code § 6.03

© A person acts recklessly, or is reckless, with respect to circumstances surrounding his conduct or the result of his conduct when he is aware of but consciously disregards a substantial and unjustifiable risk that the circumstances exist or the result will occur. The risk must be of such a nature and degree that its disregard constitutes a gross deviation from the standard of care that an ordinary person would exercise under all the circumstances as viewed from the actor's standpoint.

(d) A person acts with criminal negligence, or is criminally negligent, with respect to circumstances surrounding his conduct or the result of his conduct when he ought to be aware of a substantial and unjustifiable risk that the circumstances exist or the result will occur. The risk must be of such a nature and degree that the failure to perceive it constitutes a gross deviation from the standard of care that an ordinary person would exercise under all the circumstances as viewed from the actor's standpoint."

Translation, according to Lewis v. State and Moore v. State:

Quote :
""Reckless conduct . . . involves conscious risk creation, that is, the actor is aware of the risk surrounding his conduct or the results thereof, but consciously disregards that risk. Criminal negligence . . . involves inattentive risk creation, that is, the actor ought to be aware of the risk surrounding his conduct or the results thereof. At the heart of reckless conduct is conscious disregard of the risk created by the actor's conduct; the key to criminal negligence is found in the failure of the actor to perceive the risk.""
