Me and a friend are planning on doing a beer tour of North Carolina over Spring Break. Anyone have any suggestions of places we should go to find breweries or bars that serve homebrew? We're planning on going to Wilmington, Charlotte, Asheville, Winston-Salem, and Greensboro.

I've been to this, it's pretty cool. You learn a lot about how beer is made, and get samples at the end. Hard to beat.

As far as suggestions...umm. There's the Red Oak brewpub in Greensboro (I *think* they also make Battlefield Black, but I'm not certain...)...right here in Raleigh, Southend brews their own beer...don't know where the breweries for any of the other NC brands are though.

asheville has lots of places: french broad (brewery), highland (brewery), and Barley's bar(one of the best collections of microbrews in western nc imo), greenman's is good too; Weeping Radish in Manteo, if you are out on the outer banks anyway, stop by Outer Banks Brewing Station, Duck Rabbit in Farmville, CBC in holly springs, edenton st brewery (horniblows) in raleigh, pisgah brewing company in black mountain, top of the hill in chapel hill, front street in wilmington.

while its not a big production facility, liberty in high point always makes good stuff, they usually have a wide range of types of beers.

plus, its only a few min off of I-40

Bought this by accident at Total Wine, meant to pick up their porter, I wasn't too excited about trying it, however it was very good.

while in Asheville hit up the Brew and View, Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company on Merrimon. Its a movie theatre/restaurant that brews their own beer.

And they now have a high gravity also. Its a stout. Its like Guiness but thicker. The foam on the top is the color of coffee. Yeah. But its tasty.

the new duck rabbit is an imperial stout, the mother of all stouts. Its quite tasty, not the best IS I've had, but pretty good for a first effort.

please dont say duck rabbit imperial stout is like guinness. of course its thicker. guinness is only 4.2% abv while duck rabbit is 10% abv. guinness tastes like water. guinness is extremely light for a stout. i hate it when when people compare every "dark" beer to guinness and say oh guinness is so thick. its no thicker than budweiser, they both have similar original and final gravities. guinness actually has less calories than budweiser. conclusion guinness is not thick, its all in your head because you assume every dark beer is thick. /end rant

guinness is the reason i started drinking beer at all, but once i tried russian imperial stouts, guinness is like water now.
