Where is a good affordable place around Raleigh to get some hiking boots. I've looked at Dick's(no selection), REI, and Great Outdoor Provisions Co. are a little pricey in my opinion. 2/18/2006 10:02:42 AM |

find the brand, style, and size you want and a local store and then order over the internet.
examples of these sites are campmor.com and sierratradingpost.com (for discontinued styles and seconds).

I think any specialty sporting goods store is going to be pricey. You may want to check dept. stores or Target or something. 2/18/2006 10:18:22 AM |

They have a few at Shoe Carnival... and they are always having ridiculous sales there. Maybe you could find something there... 2/18/2006 10:20:51 AM |

the question is, what kind of boot are you looking for? any brand you have been happy with in the past? Best bet is to join rei and get a discount card, order fomr them during a member apreciation sale, and or try the boots out htere and then order online. 2/18/2006 12:19:46 PM |

I ordered mine offline from LL Bean. They were shipped fast, had great prices, and the boots are awesome. 2/18/2006 12:39:04 PM |

Hey bud, REI can be expensive, but they are always having a shit ton of sales. And if you especially go online to their REI Outlet store you can find some really good deals on boots and all other things. I bought my pair of Hi Tec Altitude boots (waterproof) from their right before a backpacking trip we took over Fall Break, and got them for about $45. Really good pair of shoes. Hope this helps. 2/18/2006 3:46:12 PM |

If you are seriously going hiking, and not just walking a few miles worth of trails it is in your best interest to spend good money on good boots. It is essential that you get some really sturdy footwear, especially if this is for serious mountain climbing. I'd go to REI and talk to the people there...I know you said you went there already, but your feet are going to be killing you after 2 hours if you don't get sturdy shoes and spending $90 on something that is going to last you years is worth it. 2/18/2006 6:14:28 PM |

^Agreed. But they may not be going hiking. I needed mine for park ranger stuff. Any job related to that or animals, or just general hiking for fun doesn't require really expensive boots. 2/19/2006 12:23:02 AM |

REI has some cheap boots that are very comfortable, have a vibram sole and are waterproof, i bought a pair of them yesterday and i like them so far. 99 bucks!!
the merrell ventilators are great too if you don't need waterproofing, they're only 80 bucks 2/19/2006 4:11:51 PM |

how bout understand that hiking boots are expensive because of what they do.
im going to assume that you will be just fine with a decent pair of agressive soled running shoes or maybe some light duty "adventure" type activity shoe (merrel, montrail, northface, salomon, etc) 2/19/2006 4:41:55 PM |
