woah woah woah, why are you going to Jerry Fallwell U?
but seriously, the fastest way is to take the NC highways thru Caswell County.

easy way...take i40 to greensboro then take 29 north all the way there. shorter way...take durham freeway-take hwy 70 exit-get on 86 north all the way to va. state line. as soon as you get into va., take danville expressway and it will merge with 29 north just outside of danville. this way saves about 20-30 minutes, and is more scenic ;-) 2/19/2006 9:49:44 PM |

Worked right outside of lynchburg va (bedford VA) for a while
you want to take US 29 out of greensboro to Roanoke then go through roanoke to I-81N or continue through 460 I think
Watch out for the cops though as 29 is only 55 mph 2/19/2006 9:51:18 PM |

I spent a few weeks their going through a tracking course. Spent most of the time either sleeping or in class. Ended up getting one day off, so we went out on a thursday night, not the most happening night or spot.
Learned alot though. 2/20/2006 3:46:58 AM |

I go through Lynchburg every time I go home, and through a bit of trial and error I've found what's by far the quickest way:
Go west on I-40 til it intersects I-85 at Hillsborough Turn east on I-85N for about two miles, then get on 86N Take 86N all the way up to Danville (make sure you take the right turn at Yanceyville) At Danville get on 29N you go all the way up to Lynchburg
It's a pretty direct route, not a lot of confusing turns. With good traffic you should get there in 2.5 hours at the speed limit. By the way, I'm going to Liberty for something too this Friday. 2/20/2006 10:40:42 AM |

definately go 86N to 29N through hillsborough. doesn't take long to get there at all. no sense in going all the way to greensboro. ~skip 2/20/2006 11:30:39 AM |

i have made this drive 20 times
dmidkiff has it right:

and surprise, surprise, panthersny proposed the worst route possible (which isn't even correct since 29 doesn't go to roanoke):

when my girlfriend was in in school up there we used to go 40 west to 86N (near the Efland exits), then to 29N all the way to lynchburg. its about 2.5 hours; DON'T SPEED. 5 over is a max once you get into VA. 2/20/2006 9:31:33 PM |

Getting there is easy, I-40 to NC-86 at Hillsborough, then to US-29 at Yanceyville. Getting back is trickier...the first time I made the trip I never saw a sign for NC-86 and drove all the way to Reidsville, got on US-158 to get back to 86, an extra 30 minutes. The second time I took the business 29 exit into Danville and followed the signs to 86.
I love NC-86, it's so vacant, has a lot of character, and the stars are gorgeous on a clear night. US-29 is boring as hell. 2/20/2006 10:17:02 PM |

I-40 till right after it merges with 85. stay IN THE SAME DIRECTION (whoever said to get on 85 north is a fucking retard.) get off at the next exit, which will be north 86 truck route. stay on this for a few miles, then take a left on 86. then what everyone else has said about 29, etc. 2/20/2006 10:34:01 PM |

you don't want 86 truck route, lots of lights to stop you up and like 5 miles out of the way
you want to go I-40 west to NC-147 through durham to I-85 south
then you want to take NC-86 north 2/20/2006 11:04:52 PM |

you can also take 501 north from durham all the way to lynchburg, passing through roxboro and south boston 2/20/2006 11:08:09 PM |

^^nah dude, truck route is quicker. i did that trip every 3 or 4 days this summer.

it takes less time. and there are only 2 lights that i'm reguarly stopped at going the truck route. as compared to driving through the town of hillsborough.
it might be more miles, but they are quicker miles.] 2/20/2006 11:18:01 PM |

yeah 501 is probably not the quickest - it's mostly 2 lanes and somewhat windy, but not much traffic. i think i did that just for a change of pace once cause i also drive the 86-29 route quite often to get to smith mountain lake.
btw, i get to 86 by 40 west --> durham freeway --> 85 south --> veer to the right on 70 west, bypass hillsborough on 70, turn right on 86 2/20/2006 11:28:47 PM |

the way i go does not take you through downtown hillsborough
i may not have been explicit enough when i said "take NC-86 north"
by that i mean take the exit with the "TO 86" sign - the 70 business exit off of 85
^ exactly

Take 30 min off their time estimate, and also print yourself out some reverse directions because getting back onto the Durham freeway is a little confusing. 2/21/2006 8:22:45 AM |

nah dude, you can call me whatever names you like, but turning east on 85N is def shorter distance-wise. I tend to go through at inactive hours so I don't get stuck up in town. Going around could be quicker at busy times.2/21/2006 1:55:58 PM |

k lynchburg was an ok place to spend a night
not much going on there
bit too conservative for my tastes, but with 3 colleges in the area its growing they say.
of course one cant see much of the town when one is stuck in a church service for 2 hours... 3/7/2006 8:42:53 PM |
