Yesterday, I bought 2 donuts and a Vault, and the price before tax was $2.00. So after tax it should be $2.14, right? Wrong!



I was charged $2.15! Where did this extra penny come from? Someone suggested that the tax had gone up to 7.5%, but I didn't think this was right because I would have heard about it. When my next customer came in line, it just so happened that her first item was $2.00. So I checked the total, and it was $2.14. I knew then that I had been charged 8% tax for something, so I decided to check the price of the donuts. I checked the price for 20 instead of 2 in case there was any rounding.



There's the extra penny! I was charged 7% for the Vault, and 8% for the donuts. Now, can anyone tell me why this is?

Ive noticed this too. I take DE courses and in Roxboro I pay $2.14 for 2 double cheeseburgers at McDonalds. When I'm in Raleigh I pay $2.16, and the same when I go to Cookout, I'm not getting charged 7% tax, yet this doesn't happen in my hometown. The prices are the same, but the tax is a penny or so different in Raleigh compared to where I live. (I cussed out a manager at Cookout for this and told him he was charging too much because tax was 7%, and he said tax is 8% now), so I don't know whats going on.

the prepared foods tax is authorized by the state, but it's levied by the county and they get all the $texas. that tax and the hotel/motel tax go into what's called an "Interlocal Fund" that's shared jointly between the county government and municipal governments.

at my store, we charge $.94 for a soda. plus tax comes to $1.00.

but, if you buy 2 sodas in the same transaction, it comes up to $1.99. haven't figured that one out yet

Sodas are also held to a higher tax than regular groceries.
