considering this was filmed in January 2004 and Garden State was only at Sundance in January 2004, i kinda doubt it's an intentional rip-off

GARDEN STATE

but seriously, what really irks me about this film...

I never though Steve Buscemi was such a pussy.

folks, you DO all know that garden state was just a modernized "the graduate," right? this sort of story is timeless. it doesn't have to be a ripoff, just because it has the same plot. it might be, but it isn't necessarily.

it's like calling superman a ripoff of the new testament:

-powerful beings send their only son to earth
-he tries to help them and has special powers
-dies and comes back to life

omg they ripped off jesus!

Liv Tyler annoys me, but this still looks better than Garden State. Steve Buscemi/Casey Affleck > Zach Braff

the equation doesn't work, and really doesn't work since we have never seen Buschemi's work behind the camera. Affleck will never be better than Braff though

some of us have seen Buscemi's work behind the camera. this isn't his first turn as a director. and although Braff plays the likable dork maybe as well as any actor working today, Affleck has an offbeat quality that I think lends itself to more interesting performances.

Man, you are so fucking wrong on that note. Were you joking? Is this satire? I think it takes more than a slight emotional parallel to make one movie a "modernized" version of a tonally, story-wise, and quality-wise completely different movie.

well, it is like the Graduate with the whole disaffected youth thing, but "modernized" is the wrong word...

i can kinda see what he's saying

you take the Mrs. Robinson character out of the graduate, and you really do have some stark similarities

i would never have really thought it because i always focus on the "YOU'RE TRYING TO SEDUCE ME" part of the film

^^^, ^^^^ The Graduate really isn't about the seduction/ affair...it's about the horror of isloation which we all face as we "grow up"

I disagree so wholeheartedly that I'm having trouble articulating my position.

I understand the parallel themes of loneliness and alienation and whatever. Thematically, and somewhat tonally, they are similar, but the arc of the characters and the interpersonal relations are so completely different. Not to mention the fact that, while The Graduate is one of the most beautifully crafted films of all time, Garden State amounts to basically a cute little Zach Braffy movie. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

On top of that, I think that while Garden State, which I must stress again that I like, tries very hard to emulate films like The Graduate, it lacks the sense of gravity and beauty I see in earlier and better movies. Garden State is like Zoso.

i see what youre gettin at and i agree pretty much.
both are good films. garden state just happpened to be a lot simpler, but it still got the point and the emotions across.

the comparison's will be there but i deifnitely dont agree garden state was any kind of ripoff. thats like saying that star wars is a rip off of lord of the rings or something. er thats a terrible example but you get the point. very similar genres exploring similar ideas and emotions but they are not the same film at all imo.

^^ trust me, i know the relationship there. i was an enormous star wars fan growing up. i was just stating an example, and one that the general public would relate too. couldnt think of 2 good movies/series off the top of my head
