I think I'm going to give up on selling my car... so next step is to donate it... I really don't want to give it to a chop shop, I would feel bad for some reason (it's not that bad off!) anyhow, i know npr occasionally takes cars, but I didn't see it on their website. does anyone know of any charities or things like NPR that take old cars or whatever? And, no, I don't just want to give it away to a person, I want to give it to an organization. My friend claims it is very fixable, elsewise I'd junk it. 3/5/2006 1:46:13 PM |

I know around Greensboro, you can donate to Goodwill or the Salvation Army one (I forget at the moment.) You could email any local tv stations and they could get you in touch with the right people. Some places let you write them off on taxes for the following year. 3/5/2006 7:25:49 PM |

what you mean some places? i've never heard of one that didn't. it's the same as taking clothes to goodwill. they give you a receipt and you write it off on next years taxes as a charitable donation.3/6/2006 9:08:44 AM |

A couple of years ago, you could donate a car to charity and claim it as a tax writeoff without an appraisal if the car was valued under $5000. If that's the case, you could donate the car to charity and claim the writeoff value as $4999.

Summary of Car Donation New Tax Law of 2005 as applicable to most online car donation charities
Thanks to the new tax law, the IRS has taken the guesswork out of how to determine the value of your vehicle.
Beginning January 1, 2005 you may deduct the full price we receive for the sale of your vehicle. This greatly simplifies the process for you in several ways.
Under the new law, if your vehicle sells for more than $500 then the following applies:
* If your vehicle sells for more than $500 you’ll know exactly the amount you may deduct, eliminating guesswork. Thus you no longer have to research and come up with an estimate of the fair market value of the vehicle. * The selling price of your vehicle becomes its fair market value and is what you can deduct on your tax return in most cases. * This also eliminates the risk of you getting into trouble by overstating the value of your deduction on your tax return. * This saves you both time and risk.
If you car sells for $500 or less at auction, you may deduct what you determine as the fair market value of your vehicle or the amount the vehicle sold for, whichever is less, and as long as that figure is under $500.00. 3/2/2008 10:20:34 PM |
