"Four Wakefield H.S. Seniors Killed In Car Accident
Speed Was A Factor In Fatal Accident, Police Say

POSTED: 10:41 am EST March 5, 2006
UPDATED: 8:55 am EST March 6, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Investigators said excessive speed was a factor in a late-night accident that killed four Wakefield High School seniors Saturday.

The accident happened just before 11 p.m. when, police said, the driver lost control of his 2004 Mazda RX8 on the Poole Road exit coming off of the new U.S. Highway 64 bypass.

Investigators said the car in which the students were traveling struck a concrete rail and then flipped over the rail, dropping about 50 feet before bursting into flames.

Witnesses told police that the vehicle was traveling more than 100 mph when it passed other vehicles and then ran off the road. Investigators calculated the speed to be 105 mph to 115 mph before the crash.

Although authorities have confirmed that the victims in the vehicle were four male seniors from Wakefield High School, their identities have not yet been released.

Friends said the four students were on their way home after watching the Wakefield boys' basketball team compete in a playoff game at East Carolina University.

Investigators say the car struck this concrete rail, flipped and dropped about 50 feet.

Wakefield High School Principal Steven Takacs declined to comment until he received confirmation of the students' identities. He did say, however, that counselors would be available on Monday to help students deal with the loss.

Wakefield High students have had their share of sorrow over the past two years.

In August, 19-year-old Ben Cummings died in a car accident, and in December 2004, freshman Jaimee Kellermann died in an accident in Virginia.

Neither Cummings nor Kellermann were driving at the time of the accidents; both drivers survived and were charged."

The parents have to be feeling pretty bad right about now. Why give your KID a car that will go that fast in the first place?? I had to work to earn the money to buy my car, and I took better care of it. Kids today are too damn spoiled and have no responsibility.

Some of you guys are assuming the parents are immediately guilty for buying the vehicle. I knew a guy in HS who saved up like crazy to buy an RX and finally got it his senior year. Probably not a typical case, but don't make preemptive judgements right off the bat.

Any updates to the story yet?

What kind of stupid statement is this? I began driving a 400hp 67 Chevelle at around 17 (when we finished it). Before then I drove our 93 Z28. I was drag racing (sanctioned track) doing 0-105 in about 6.1 seconds at 15. I am 26 and have yet to get ticket or have a wreck (knocks on wood).

There are plenty, plenty of people in this world that are smart enough to handle even fast cars at 16.

Your "point" is about as well made as the one about giving a "kid" a fast car (as if a Corolla can't do 100)

The RX-8 was made for 4 people and does have 4 doors. It is NOT a 2-seater by any means.

I love going above 80 around that turn it feels good...but the kid must have locked up the breaks in order for it to go "crashing" into the wall. My guess is that he must have freaked out when flying up on a car and hit the breaks and into the barrier and beyond.

Wasn't there some state that tried to pass a law where if the driver was under 18 they could only have one other passenger under the age of 18? Their reasoning was that the hotdog/showoff factor goes up with each unsupervised teenage passenger in the car.

^^ There's something similar in this state. A driver with a permit can only have one unrelated person in the car when he/she is driving, or something similar.

You make a good point. A point that at age 17 you had an appreciation for a car with power, or I'd imagine you did, having worked on it. It doesn't sound like you were just handed the keys to some cool car for your 16th birthday.

OMFG THEY DESERVED TO DIE BECAUSE THEY WERE SPEEDING

yes, they were speeding, and yes, it was the driver's fault, but fuck every single one of you mother fuckers that think "HE DESERVED TO DIE"
He was a fucking kid who made a mistake that cost him his (and 3 of his friends) life. it's a shame he couldn't learn from his mistake.

I didn't say they deserved to die.

Mistakes are running a redlight... accidently..

Going 105-115.. nearing twice the speedlimit on a highway, coming off an exit ramp... is not a mistake.

4 people killed because of one persons bad judgement will always suck. But honestly how many people here have shown off in there car with their friends riding around with them. I guess the rest of us are just lucky. The sad thing is we will never know why he was driving so fast. Perhaps someone in the car was injured and he was trying to get him help? just a though.

I've been over 100 in a 1987 Accord and I bet it was a hell of a lot more dangerous than doing it in an RX-8. What does it matter that it's a nice car or a sports car. They could have done the same thing in just about any shitbox and y'all wouldn't be having the "sports car" discussion.
