I doubt many of ya'll have heard of it, but the movie The Guardian is coming out in October. Its a story about a troubled young man played by Ashton Kutcher who goes in to the Coast Guard and becomes a rescue swimmer. He learns from an old experienced guy played by Kevin Costner. Its being shot by a Disney company.
Anyways, the interesting part is the LA Enterprise sent out over around a dozen reservations to us this week for a movie shoot for this. They are all needed in Elizabeth City at the Coast Guard base. Apparently Kutcher and Costner and the cast are going to be out there for next week or so? and needed a fleet of vehicles, mainly minivans, large SUV's and a couple of luxury SUVs like Escalades. Not sure how long they will be on location up here, but I was pretty impressed that actors of Costners caliber (not saying much about Kutcher though he is really popular) are coming to dumpy northeastern NC and shooting a movie. 3/8/2006 8:57:56 PM |

Yeah... not really.
Annapolis was not endorsed by the naval academy and the navy told people not to see it. being a rescue swimmer is an enlisted position, not an officer which would make it very un service academy...
Agreed, I wish they had other actors, but name one movie that was about the coast guard...
Yours mine and ours was a romantic comedy that had nothing to do with the coast guard and was orginally supposed to be set at the naval academy in annapolis....
Perfect Storm while the coast guard played a role, was not about them, but more the fishermen...
This is the 1st movie made about the Coast Guard pretty much since the 1930s.... This movie has the backing of the organization and the reason they are filming in 'dumpy North Eastern NC' is because Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City is the place where all the Rescue Swimmers are Trained. It is also the largest Coast Guard base in existance. Not saying much, but for an organization that is only about 35,000 strong, its pretty darn big...

I know more of the backstory than that coppertop, my bosses husband is a Coastie at E-City, I'm just pretty impressed that they came up here. Wilmington gets 99% of the movie action.
I didn't know there had been that few movies about the USCG though. 3/9/2006 7:24:36 AM |
