A friend and I were discussing sleep this morning, and he was telling me how when he wakes up during the night he gets up in the morning feeling shitty. I then tell him I always wake up during the night (usually around 4AM) for about less than a minute, then proceed to fall right back asleep. I also tell him this has been going on as I can remember.

I thought this was a pretty normal phenomenon to wake up maybe once during the early hours of the morning but according to my friend this is not in fact normal; it is more normal to go to sleep and not wake up at all during the night/morning.

So how many of you guys wake up in the night versus only waking up once your alarm clock goes off in the morning?

I tend to wake up just before my alarm would go off whether it's set or not, and no matter how late I stay up.

Waking up at night means something's wrong. Just because you can't feel it doesn't mean it's not there -- your body isn't awake so you don't really feel everything.

You might need to drink water before bed (waking up because you're dehydrated) or you might need to take a piss before you go to bed (you might be waking up because you have to piss, but you can't feel it when you wake up for a brief second).

I also used to wake up a lot during the night and never feel all that rested. Then I (at the demand of my wife) covered up the windows so that we had total darkness, and I never slept better in my life. I always thought that the blinds were enough.

But I'm a man, so what the hell do I know about drapes and curtains and shit?

Dang. Maybe my friend was making some sense. I guess I feel pretty rested, but how do I know what "rested" is if I've been doing this for a while? Even in boot camp I'd wake up in the middle of the night for no reason and I'd be tired as fuck when we finally got to bed.

do you find yourself yawning a lot during the day?

or feeling like you don't have enough energy to do what you need to do?

i feel fine in the morning. in fact, on the rare occasion i do sleep all the way through, i am usually really sluggish.

I'll tell you one thing; there's a pill to cure this problem!

Honestly, though, this shit is ridiculous. It's not to say there's nothign wrong with you (your friend, anyone else, etc.), but no one's perfect - some problems are worse than others.

For reference, I sleep straight through the night and still feel like shit everyday (sleepy, etc.)

i wake up several times a night myself, sometimes 5 or 6 times if i'm dehydrated. its been going on for as long as i can remember. someone told me it may be because i'm sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress but i dunno. i've just learned to live with it.

Yep, I guess I've grown accustomed to it as well. I'm wide awake during the day and tired at night, as it should be. Judging by the responses this is nothing serious just as I thought; I wake up, look at the clock, then roll over and go right back to sleep. It could be worse and I couldn't get back to sleep after I wake, but this isn't the case. I'll just tell my friend to STFU this afternoon and keep his "wisdom" to himself. What the hell does he know about the human normalcy?

I wake up, and stay awake between 2:30AM and 4:00AM EVERY MORNING. And I'm talking wide-awake, ready to face the world. The thing is, the earliest I leave for work is 10:50AM, so I'm fighting to get back to sleep because I don't want to be tired, and then I end up being more tired after falling back asleep than I initially was. This week I was on roxicet and still woke up at those times. The only difference was I was too dizzy/stoned to want to move.
I've started reading more. This morning I read (start to finish) Jurassic Park.

then sometime is most likely causing you to get a sub par sleep and thus not enough rest. maybe you toss and turn all night and don't realize it. that happens t oa lot of people.

is it that short, or do you just read overly fast?

Yeah, I started it, then realized how inane it was to start a people's poll when I wake up albeit, a little groggy, but otherwise refreshed and ready to take on a day full of haters.

It is normal to wake up during the night - normal for me and some others. Just like it's normal for some to sleep all the way through the night/morning. I still come out with a good night's sleep in the end.

Before I broke my nose I would sleep straight through until about 4:00 AM then wake up once an hour until about 8, then sleep straight until my alarm clock went off.

After I deviated my septum I would wake up every 30 minutes without fail, unless I was absolutely hammered. This was the reason I elected to have it fixed.

Now I'm back to my usual 4-8 routine, although it gets worse if I don't sleep alone.

^Is the procedure bad? I've had a deviated septum for years, and I snore like a freight train.

I also never feel really rested...so maybe I need to have this done.

How do I put this. Yes and no. On the surface, a septoplasty is supposed to be a relatively smooth procedure with few complications. It's an outpatient procedure, and I was up and mobile for the remainder of the day, sleeping only because my dad was worried I was moving around too much.

The first 24 hours is supposed to be the worst, because you have all kinds of crap packed in your nose to stop the bleeding. When they pull it out, you'll wonder if that shit wasn't just packed in your nose but circling around in your brain cavity. It makes eating a long and slow chore, though you are free to eat whatever you feel like. I strongly do not recommend drinking 2 days after surgery.

The potential complications come from the scabs after surgery. I had a scab come off overnight while I was sleeping, and woke up bleeding. I called my doctor and in effect he said 'get your ass to the ER, I will meet you there.' This is very rare behavior from a surgeon's standpoint.

When I get to the ER they couldn't stop the bleeding. Eventually they had to do an emergency cauterizing procedure that was 10 times more painful than the actual septoplasty. However this doesn't happen to most patients, and only happened to me because I was trying to resume my normal life style too soon.

So yeah the procedure is worth it in the long run. I breathe so much better now, but there were times when I thought I was going to regret it.

I don't know if there's an actual term, but I call it "Sleep paranoia." Yeah, very scientific.

But what usually happens is, on a day where I have something REALLY important to do fairly early in the morning, I'll wind up waking up multiple times before I need to be up because I'm scared of oversleeping said event. Its like I'm constantly watching the clock.

However on worry-free days I can usually sleep the night through. Usually.

I wake up every night around 4 and go right back to sleep. Then, I proceed to wake up every hour until about 9 (if I stay in bed that long). Then, if I sleep in that morning, I wont wake up anymore until I get up. I am clinically depressed, so idk if that has anything to do with it.

I wake up about everynight. Usually its from rolling over, or my bf rolling over. When I'm at home I almost always sleep straight through the night.
