I cannot appologize enough for starting another thread with the word "Herb" in it, but actually want to know what people make of this. Interesting fact #3 for us has a source, but no link. So I'm stuck showing you guys the deadspin link. On the plus side, you get to read about Cal's uber psych-out if you'd not heard about it before...

i actually saw this somewhere else, it went on to say that many players said that it wasn't so much herb himself, they just didnt' think that they would like the offense.

The poll was some bull shit SI did about polling players about their likes and dislike in their respective conferences. The reason given was that nobody likes our offensive system. Quote:"It's hard to play against, but I hate his offense."...."That backdoor stuff just isn't for me."

Maybe there's a reason they're playing somewhere else? As opposed to anywhere with this system?

Yeah because I am sure they looked at State and this offense first before making a decision on any other program.

Maybe. Maybe(probably) not. I just thought it was a semi-interesting bit. Seemed better than 99% of the other Herb-related threads, too.

Of course, there already was a thread about it as it turned out. So I'll take the hit for that.

I am sure there isn't one since more than like it doesn't exist. I could post on my blog that 89% of ACC players hate Coach K and I am sure I could turn some head too.

This was a stupid SI poll in their latests issue. Only non-NC State players were polled and it was only a 36% consensus.

36% is a lot when you've got 12 different options

that's over a third of the league

it still doesn't mean shit though

Well we did go after Chris Wilcox, Eric Williams, and John Gilchrist. But actually I think we are better off without getting 2 of those. The only I wish we could have gotten is Williams because as much as I hate the guy, he is very solid.

Eric Williams is the best center in the the ACC.

Skip just never took advantage of that until, oh, about 3 games ago.

Im pretty sure that at one point we were in the runnings for Eric Williams. He committed to Wake very early.

Im not making shit up. Ill find it somewhere. I KNOW we tried for him but he was unsure of Herb's stability. He went to Wake Forest-Rolesville. Dammit. Someone else has to remember that.

We didn't have a shot at Williams because he and Gray kept hearing that Herb was going to get fired.

Keep in mind that most high-level basketball recruiting is two years ahead of schedule, which means these current seniors were being recruited during Herb's one losing season.

""is down to three schools. Williams is contemplating committing to either NC State, Clemson or Wake Forest. He says that he’ll make a decision following his appearance at the Nike All-American Camp. Williams has made unofficial visits to each of the schools. He’s said all along that he wishes to remain close to home. “Each school allows me to stay close to my family,” Williams said. The big man averaged 26 points a game last year. He’s enrolled in summer school classes. The 285-pounder is an aggressive rebounder who has a tremendous value in being able to score around the bucket. He’s trimmed down in recent months and it has increased his athleticism." - Blue Chip Hoops"

I told you so.

Quote :
"Right now two schools have emerged as the favorites. “Wake Forest and N.C. State,” Williams said. “I guess it’s because they are close to home and I told [the coaches] I want to be close to home.”"

Quote :
""Trimmed down Eric Williams is a priority for NC State. He lives about 20 minutes from the Pack's campus. Wake Forest was the first school, under Odom, to offer Williams a scholarship. Staying close to home is a priority and NC State was the second school to come in and offer a grant (unless Clemson snuck in and offered just before the Pack). The Pack is working him extremely hard and they could be tough to beat in this one." - BlueChip Hoops"

^Yeah.

I mean, I would've liked to have a center earlier--an actual post player would've been a nice addition to Hodge, Grundy, Melvin, etc.

But I'm not a fan of Eric's attitude. Maybe it's just something that happens at Wake, but that entire team just rubs me the wrong way.

Either way all of this complaining won't help us getting future recruits, so I agree that someone needs to come out and make a stand on where Herb's position is with this program soon.

36%??

That means what 64% of players in the ACC wouldn't mind playing for the Pack? That sounds like a compliment to me. I mean if every player said they wouldn't mind playing for their own coach, we would have something like 8.3 % wouldn't mind and 91% wouldn't.......

To say that only 36% don't like our coach / our offense, seems like a pretty good stat

No, it just says that when asked to name the one coach you'd least like to play for, they picked Herb.

The exact opposite (that 64% would thus pick Herb as the one coach they did want to play for) can't be arrived at from that.

I've always thought that Shavlik Randolph was our biggest ACC miss. Granted he didn't do much at Duke, but he is already looking like a decent role player in the NBA so the talent is still there. Plus he was a fucking legacy here and would have been awesome to have him and Hodge together for a couple of seasons.

Shav would've been a much better fit here, rather than trying to force himself into Duke's system.

But it's all in the past anyway.

I just hope we add a couple of good big men in the '07 class (along with Wright and hopefully McMillan).

^^ But wasn't he hurt for a while? I just don't think he fit into the team with Redick taking all of the outside shots and SheWill getting the inside looks. I think he could have reached his potential on a different team.

like some people have said...this poll was in sports illustrated and is in fact true...

Quote :
"OPPOSING COACH YOU'D LEAST LIKE TO PLAY FOR: HERB SENDEK 36%

"It's hard to play against, but I hate his offense"..."That backdoor stuff just isn't for me.""

I have said this before, but it's my only gripe with herb...the top players AREN'T going to commit to a school where they don't get to show their NBA potential to its fullest...if Lebron or Kobe went to college I couldn't see them running backdoor cuts and screens...the offense restricts the talent we can bring in in my opinion...

This may have been mentioned in the other thread. In this poll SI interviewed 1 player from each team and asked them all the same questions. You could not vote for your own team on any of the questions. I believe they did not include BC. So 4 of the 11 said they would not want to play for Herb. This is not nearly enough of a sample to say "36% of ACC players"

Also in this same poll for the Big 12. Bob Knight was voted coach they'd least like to play for as well as being voted coach they'd most like to play for.

A couple of NBA teams do run a variation of the princeton offense. New Jersey, the most notable. With all of Denver's backdoor moves, I wantto think that they also run something similar, but I'm not sure on that.

So if the NBA uses the system, surely Herb's system can help in preperation for the NBA.

devils advocate would say...does the offense really restrict the talent or is it the other way around?

it's as if all the players polled couldn't have been bench warmers or that all 12 teams have better players than the one currently at State.
