to have everyone so pissed off at him?

I've heard the "Will Langley doesn't take this seriously," "Cody Williams is so emo" etc etc commentary -- but most of it is typical political jibes. But the anti-Quick sentiment seems to be hardcore.

I wasn't at NCSU last year so I missed whatever went on. Anyone mind filling me in?

1) Will Quick is not just a member, but also an apparent pawn of, his fraternity and of Greek life in general, something that is fundamentally offensive to many at NCSU and to all freedom-loving, decent human beings.
2) He has not, to the minds of many, adequately defended himself regarding various scandals in which he may have been involved -- the whole ticket issue, for one.
3) He has no demonstrated, strongly-rooted loyalty to NCSU. He is not from North Carolina. By the accounts I've heard, this school wasn't his first choice. His ties to this place are feeble at best.
4) He represents a lot of negative stereotypes about preppy, frattastic douchebags.
5) He's been an avid SG person for a while, which few view as a good thing. This plays into his apparent goal in life: getting elected to offices. I'm inherently leery of anybody who is desperate to win votes his whole fucking life, and it doesn't look like I'm the only one.
6) The prevailing idea, which could, I suppose, be false, is that his familiy has money. That, and the fact that he doesn't have to pay tuition, means that he can't really understand what it is to be a rank-and-file student. How can we expect him to be adequately angry about our financial burdens if he does not share them? That's to say nothing of the fact that, in general, nobody likes a rich asshole.
7) For a lot of people, the biggest problem is that he handled his loss to the Pirate Captain like a bitch. He's been fomenting resistance to him ever since he lost the first round of elections last year. There have been a lot of rumors to the effect that he used his SG buddies and other friends (the sort that only come with money) to try to subvert him in the school and even in the community. Even if those are false rumors, I haven't heard him trying to deny them.

---

For me, personally, I view him as everything that can go wrong with democratic politics. He gets to run because he's got money. Hell, I had a few people come and ask me to run for CHASS Senator, but I can't, just because I've got a job and similar obligations that take precedence. Maybe if I didn't have to pay for jack shit, I could play around in Student Government.
He's in the pocket of an elitist set of organizations (frats) with nothing resembling a set of moral values. These same organizations promote nothing that I (and many others) support while simultaneously trying to manipulate our government extraofficially.

In short, if he wins, I'll probably manage to overcome to the urge to live up to my family name -- but I won't like it.

WHOA! If you're suggesting that most kids have their parents pay for college, you're crazy.

If you're referring to student loans...how is that not paying? They took out the loan to pay the tuition. And they typically still have to work jobs to cover expenses.

Wow... if these are the very best reasons you can come up with to dislike him, he sounds like one of the better members of Student Government to me - and one of the people most worthy of getting votes.

If these are the main reasons to oppose a SG person for office, then WOW - Student Government must have got a LOT better since the days when I was in it.

Wolfpack2K, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT YOU JUST DID THERE:

You cited GrumpyGOP's reasons for not supporting Quick.

Then went on to say that, since you perceived GrumpyGOP's reasons as lame, Quick must be most worthy of getting votes.

Do you see how your one reason is dumber than all of GrumpyGOP's reasons?

"WOW...GRUMPYGOP, IN MY OPINION, YOU DIDN'T COME UP WITH TOO MANY GOOD REASONS. SINCE YOU COULDN'T MAKE A GOOD ARGUMENT AGAINST HIM, HE MUST BE THE BEST."

yes, i am saying a large percentage either have their parents pay outright or have their parents take out loans

its why getting students involved in actions to stop tuition hikes never work, most of them dont care

I think there is quite a mixture of who pays for college. Some who have parents that pay for everything and some that pay for all of it themselves through loans. But I would imagine the largest amount of students have it split up in some form or another. They pay part, either out of pocket from jobs or through loans, and their parents pay part of it, either outta pocket or through loans.

no doubt, but there's also a huge chunk of the student body that works 20+ hours a week...which, at least according to our advisers, supposedly knocks your GPA by a full grade or more

and then you've got poor bastards like me that not only work, but had to drop out for five years

sure some people might have legitimate reasons for not liking the guy, but on TWW i think the motivation should finally be named

i'd call it "The Paul Cousins Phenomenon"...a majority of chit chat wasn't exactly sure why they hate the guy...or who he even is...but they just know they're supposed to hate him...so they act accordingly

Perhaps. Even so, I would guess that the general student perception -- if possibly not accurate -- is that Quick doesn't feel any sort of squeeze at all for being in college.

Hey, if you want a pack of fraternity sons of bitches running your school, I encourage you to vote accordingly down in Georgia. That reason alone would be enough for me to bitterly, savagely hate him. The rest is also good, though.

Wolfpack2k, you've made the list for all the purges to come, even if you don't go to this school.

I think some of you need to reread the question starting this thread.

The question is about the general attitude towards quick and Grumpy answered it more than adequately. They aren't bad reasons anyways, but they aren't necessarily his reasons.

The truth is most people don't give two shits about SG, so the reasoning behind their votes, if they do vote, isn't going to be that sophisticated.

I for one have been fucked over by quick.

he and i were both managers of the women's tennis team 2 years back. we both got paid to string racquets on a month by month basis. he just stopped showing up and still collected his check for 2 months without talking to anyone about it. this coincided with his first sg election ironically, and the start of his being a sg shitbag.

HE IS THE ONLY REASON I'M VOTING... JUST TO VOTE AGAINST HIM

I'm a dickweed for lots of reasons, but yours isn't one of them.

Quote :
"but almost everything you said was a rumor or just plain stupid"

O rly?

First of all, I outright admit several places in there that the perceptions of Quick might well be wrong. I'm telling you why people in general hate him, not necessarily why I do. Though I will admit, until I see some compelling evidence to the contrary, I do tend to personally agree with the reasons laid out.

And even if they are rumors, they hold some value in a roundabout way -- outright ignoring them tells us something about how much Will Quick cares what we think.

But let's go into more detail and assuage your concerns, shall we?

-I don't see how you can question that Will Quick is a tool of his frats and frats in general. Look at his appointee from a couple of years back, Adam Whitehouse -- a personal friend of Quick's from fraternity life with virtually nothing in the way of qualifications. Since then, that, ah, gentleman's appointed incumbency caused him to be "re"-elected, giving him the opportunity to expend your fees in such meaningful ways as that joke resolution he filed a couple of months back about the birth control. If that isn't blatant fraternity-related cronyism, what is?

-Most of the parts you emboldened seem to be matters of taste. Apparently, you prefer preppy, frattastic douches with money, who are attached at the hip to student government and who strive to be politicians for the rest of their lives; all this while I (and the majority) prefer human beings who can think for themselves and don't leech off of others for their sense of self-worth as much as for their wealth.

Quote :
"I for one have been fucked over by quick.
"

I can't say the same, but I've got a few friends that he either screwed over or leered at excessively. I have personally been affronted by some of his cronies, though.

i dont prefer preppy kids; i think frats are dumb. but just because he is in a frat or his parents may (or may not) have money does not not mean he is a poor leader. familiarity with the government, on the other hand, is advantageous when you are trying to get things accomplished.

^^Oh, cut that simple-minded bullshit out.

How many fucking Greek boys are crawling all over this site? How many other spineless frat-lackeys like yourself are on here?

The whole, "TWW people are nerds" defense is and has always been the last recourse of someone who is at a loss for a meaningful argument.

It's one thing to be in a frat. I don't care for it, but it doesn't automatically make me start having intergenerational flashbacks to Ford's theater. What we can't stand is when someone is a fucking pawn and gives his life over to those organizations.

Unless what you're trying to accomplish is tearing that government (or at least its culture) apart. I want a shift in the thinking of the Senate far more than I want any party on Hillsborough, and the kind of person who has so long suckled the thick black bile of corruption and personal importance from the rancid teat of student government is not likely to spit it out.
