S4.

Are those the only choices? How about a newer Legacy GT, older E55, or slightly used R32, 300C/Magnum, G35...

i've heard the twin turbo s4s are poop but i'd imagine you're looking at the 4.2 powered ones in which case i would say... s4... they're one of the best sounding cars ever

^^^ those numbers are on upgraded turbos..... like $8k worth of upgraded turbos

I don't see the point of even posting that graph. Most of the cars he's considering will make that kind of power (Or at least be similarly quick) with well over $8k into them.

^^ I do, but I'd probably take an M3 or an M5 over one.

[Edited on March 22, 2006 at 12:43 PM. Reason : I vote for a 4 door M3 or an M5.]

I've seen one M5 for under $30k and it had over 100k miles and an interior that reminded me of a transvestite whore (slut red with woodgrain.) Given the choice between that and the others listed, I'd go with an E46 M3. All the M3/S4 comparos that I've seen give the edge to the M. I'd also consider an STi just because you could get one with very low miles for well under your $30k limit.

the s4 requires you to take the entire engine out and remove the front bumper to access the turbos. I wouldn't want a used car that I'd be working on myself that was that difficult to work on.

M5 is the solution to your problems.

I'd say M3 but you want a 4 door.

Reliability, Power, Great looks, etc. all packaged into one.

I don't know enough about the Volvo to assert much about it.

The S4 by comparison the M5 is a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned.

^^ I have mixed feelings about that, BUT, I still advocate teh M5 wholeheartedly.

Granted, replacement parts for that bia are expensive as hell and the S4 would be theoretically cheaper to maintain.

The Volvo will be destroyed by the other cars on the list. Read any Car and Driver or Road and Track. On to the real competitors......

Now you're splitting hairs, so you have to decide which class of car you want:

-M5 is a fat girl, it weighs a hair under 4000 lbs.

-The current S4 has the same problem, about 3600 lbs. The previous generation was better (~1999) at ~3350 and you upgrade the computer (<$500) and achieve around 300 hp (the waste gates are computer controlled, so an upgrade will increase the boost pressure).

-The e46 M3 is just a hair under 3400 lbs and the e36 is 3150 lbs.

I say get thet e46: its newer (less repair), you have a $30k budget so you will have to shop but you can find one, it IS bigger than the e36 with real passenger space in the back, it weighs less than or equal to the Audis, legendary BWM handling, RWD, and its engine is 3.2 L w/ 333 hp (>100 hp/liter @8000 rpm) there IS NO SOUND MORE WICKED than 3.2L @ 8000 rpm. Also, if you ever decide to race, BWM have an ENORMUSE racing community and there are upgrades galore.

Why RWD is more fun (<-read, faster) than AWD: It gives the more driver control by allowing the driver to more effectivly "steer" the car with the throttle. Also, when you feel like being a hoodlum, power slides are at the flick of your toes.

um, no. rwd is not faster, all things equal. who says you can't powerslide awd? do you know wtf you're talking about at all?

The only fun-lookin' awd cars I've seen (from Best Motoring, mostly) are Evo's. All other awd cars understeer too much.. and watching WRX's at a couple drift events was no fun at all.

the s4 dyno above... wasn't it running something like 104 octane? i never understood the point of putting stuff like that into a car just to dyno. wouldn't you rather know how much power you're making with the fuel you actually use to drive the car

Not even close to what you are talking about, but I would want the new legacy or forester XT.

My current maxima makes a damn fine DD IMO. In daily traffic it is hard to push a car to where the ones you list would really shine.

On a side note a friend of mine had an older M3. Different tires sizes front and back so you could never rotate the tires (assuming directional).

Anyhow, I'm sure it is a nice car. Naasief had a M5 for a while and it was nothing but trouble if I remember correctly.

in similar cars with similar hp an awd car will almost always be slower due to extra weight and the fact that manufacturers usually put less tire on them because they can get away with it.

+ you're not asking the front wheels to brake, steer and put down power.

the best place to see this is the 911s... the awds have always been slower around a track.

but there is an extreme... when you have what would be TOO much power for a track usually awd makes that power manageable.

on track with a typical weight car say 3300 lbs
i'd say and in know someone is going to bitch or whatever i'm just saying this is what i think would be comfy on a track.
fwd<250-300whp
rwd<500whp (unless MASSIVE tires are used)
awd... i've seen 700-1200hp skylines go around a track fast as balls. but only vids i have no idea what the upper bound on that would actually be

keep in mind i'm thinking of a 3000-3500lb m3,wrx, a4 shaped cars nothing enzo like or anything of that sort.
again though this is just e-racing and my OPINION

i'd say go my order would be v8 s4,m5,m3
the s60rs are cool too but not as fast stock and not the most reliable modified.

http://www.evolvecars.com/site/index.php?id=79,102,0,0,1,0&hashID=a9a4554978c3f6886afbd695f8c2f7f6
but that is sexy
honestly though the sound of that 4.2 audi is orgasmic.

from daily driving an '02 Z06 vette, it cant be beat. great driver, plenty of room (for 2, less dd to the bar, haha) plenty of trunk space, and it gets good gas (well, mind dont, but thats my foot's fault). and you can get it for that price, rather low milage....cant beat it
