I am a master's candidate in the English department graduating in May (thesis defended successfully last week!!!!! )

I also got my BA at State in 2004. I still have my robe, cap, and tassel from my first graduation.

The Reg & Recs page says that master's gowns are more expensive than undergraduate gowns....but it also has a separate listing for master's hoods.

Does anyone know if there is a difference between the actual robe for undergraduates and graduates? I'd rather not spend money on another robe, if they're the same.

At the graduate level people end up wearing different robes. Some buy the really, really fancy ones that you have to special order, but most people don't. If you have a plain black robe from college, then it will look fine with the hood.

on a side note, do we have to dress up for graduation or can we wear jeans and flip flops? I'm not going to the big RBC deal, but the department ceremony. In high school, we couldn't walk if we wore jeans. I'm broke and have no "nice" clothes

^^You may want to look into, you know, one pair of nice slacks, a nice shirt, and nice shoes for all those occassions that come after graduation (like interviews) and the life events you start to hit mid-twenties (like weddings and funerals). You don't have to go blow $100+ to get an outfit appropriate for those sorts of things, and when an aunt/uncle/grandparent/high school friend has died isn't when you want to have to go try to find a good deal on these things.

Anyone know the charge per tassel? My two majors are in two different colleges, and last time I went to graduation, it seemed like everyone who was in that situation had one for each college (heck, I earned both and I'm sporting them proudly).

^^Eh, I thought about getting a skirt, and I work at a shoe store so I could "borrow" a pair for a few hrs. As for after graduation, I'm going to grad school so bum clothes are still good.

Yup per tassel, but its not as much as everything else.

Entirely depends on the department. My department (animal sci) everyone wore robes. My friend in Food Science, it was optional. Most departments, particularly spring, expect robes but just ask your coordinator.

The Master's robes are a little more ornate, with long, dangling sleeves, but I don't know as anyone would especially notice. The mortarboard might look a little funny without the tassel, though.

As for what you wear underneath, nobody is going to see much except for your feet. Can depend where you are, too...my department's ceremony is in Reynolds Coliseum, which should be around 500 degrees on graduation day...

They're selling souvenier tassels for $6...they're red-and-white instead of black. I don't think anyone would get stressed out about the color.

Are the undergraduate robes any different from those in high school? Mine is solid black and looks just like the pictures I have seen of previous undergraduate graduations. It is from Jostens. I was just planning to buy the souvenir tassel, but I forgot different departments have different colors. That might complicate things.

No, there's no difference betwen a high school robe and a Bachelor's robe.

Some departments DO use different tassel colors. I'm not sure if they post tassel police outside the ceremony for those departments or not. My guess is not. One woman at our ceremony forgot her mortarboard last semester, but arranged with someone a few rows ahead of her to loan one to her while she walked across the stage. Perhaps a similar arrangement?

each college has its own tassel color and thats the one you are supposed to wear to the ceremony. at the main ceremony you sit in college designated sections. the bookstore will sell you the appropriate color.

you can also buy an additional NCSU (red & white i believe) tassel if you wish.

The cap and gown are identical for all undergraduate majors.

The *tassel* that you put on the cap (it's not permanently affixed) is the only thing that changes undergrad to undergrad (and any sashes/cords/etc).

Since you and your brother were both BLS and therefore both CALS, you can use his cap, gown, and tassel. If you want your own tassel, you can buy just the tassel for $5 at the bookstore.
