PHI 212 w/ Hettche over Distance Education (distance.ncsu.edu)
He's a great teacher, very resonable worklaod and easy to get a solid A if you do your assigned work. 3/24/2006 12:34:18 AM |

phi 221 or phi 201?
phi 221 is Contemporary Moral Issues. It can be a good class with the right professor. I'm not aware of any phi 201. If you mean Log 201 which the philosophy department offers then I would be a little confused as to what kind of requirement would have you chosing between an ethics class and a logic class. Symbolic logic can get boring unless you are into that sorta thing. If you're not a philosophy major I say definitely go with phi 221. If by phi 201 you mean something other than log 201 that I haven't heard of/isn't listed on the philosophy course listing, then I might be able to give more advice if you tell me what the class is about. 3/24/2006 12:43:10 AM |

i had marnell for 221 and really enjoyed it a lot of people didn't participate in discussions and didnt like the class, but if you do the reading (at least some of it) and participate in the class discussions you will get an A and enjoy the class
and i hate saying that because i dont want to make it out to be just an easy A, it was also a very enjoyable class. the reading introduced me to some new positions on a few issues and i learned a lot.
marnell is also really nice outside of the classroom if you ever have any questions
i highly recommend 221 with marnell 3/24/2006 10:37:08 PM |

Marnell was the most monotone and boring teacher I've had to date. We covered topics that have been beaten to death.. death penalty, abortion... It was such a cliche philosophy class. I was bored out of my mind. To add to your agony, the things that come out of other people's mouths just make you want to grab the nearest golf club and go to town on them. 3/24/2006 11:27:39 PM |

i had marnell for 214... for business ethics where you go into specific cases like that it can be more interesting if you're newer to philosophy. that might be where marnell is strongest... i know on some days he could come across a bit boring, but most of the time for that class atleast it was interesting. hes a nice guy and with a little real effort you'll get a good grade for sure if his 221 is anything like his 214. 3/25/2006 12:32:27 AM |

Do not take Hambourger.
You will regret it.
Unless you like to listen to someone stuttering for an entire hour straight. About a bunch of shit that isn't even philosophy.....it was almost impossible not to fall asleep. 3/26/2006 6:49:20 PM |

I have Pierce this semester for PHI 221 now. It's mildly interesting but the tests are easy. Your grade is made up of 3 tests...that's all. 3/27/2006 3:35:08 PM |

just to remind you...drop with hambourger now. here is a pretty decent summary of what to expect from school tool:
instructor : Hambourger instructor rating : 0 - Horrible instructor comments : IT IT IT IT IT IT IT IT WAS WAS HORRIBLE, BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT, AND AND AND. If you can understand that, then take the course, b/c all he does is stutter and confuse people on his random ass stories. He barely lets people voice an opinion and seems to never agree with your opinion. Does keep class only 40 minutes long, but doesnt arrive until 12-13 minutes late, so class actually lets out 2-3 minutes late everyday.
I laughed when I read this- but only because it's true. 3/27/2006 4:56:50 PM |
