Talk to a financial aid advisor. They will lay out what options are available and the steps needed for each. (Your situation also sounds a bit peculiar ... they can probably address it best).

if I go in debt, it will be to my dad. You might try talking to your parents about something similar.

Not true. You might not be able to get a subsidized staford loan but you can get something.

Yeah but I'm trying to walk in May. They will put a hold on my account so I won't graduate. And I can't get a subsidized loan because I need a cosigner..which I don't have.

I have had the same problem with financial aid. The financial aid advisors are USELESS. If you have any credit built up at all... and dont already have debt problems... you MAY be able to use Sallie Mae. They had one loan and let me get it without a cosigner. It won't be a whole lot, but it would help... atleast a grand or so if they'll approve you. Good luck. FAFSA gives some people an unnecessary free ride... and it gives others nothing to work with whatsoever. But whatever... do the best you can. I dont quite understand why you can't just get the Unsubsidized Stafford, though. That will cover all of your tuition and won't put any holds on your account.

I believe 24 is the age where you can get yourself declared an independent so that your 'rents money doesn't come into the equation. Since you're 23 maybe take a year off to work and then get declared as an independent if your parents aren't paying their part of the expected family contribution... but I’d only do that as a last resort. I always felt that if I took a year off I was afraid I might not come back.

You don't need a cosigner for the Stafford loan, subsidized or not.
Have you done the FAFSA and submitted the aid application to NCSU? If not, do it ASAP. You won't get the best deal, but they'll what they can to help you out.

^with regards to independent status...This may not help you (thuglina), but if your parents are turned down for a PLUS loan, you're automatically given access to the amount of Stafford loan funds that you'd be entitled to as an independent student at your grade level...just thought I'd throw that out for anyone reading this thread...maybe it'll help you

Do the thing on fastweb...there is a loan program that I've only seen listed there (no, I can't remember the name of it) that seems to end up in everyone's results. It's a private foundation that provides the loans, but their rates are only slightly higher than government loans.

Thanks for you help.
I got a unsubsidized stafford loan through sallie mae..and I had to get my dad to co sign. I did the fafsa a couple of years ago and they said my parents made too much for any type of financial aid..but I could get loans. thanks for the input tho..I'll try the search on the web.

you could hould have researched more. It sounds like you really need every penny, and 3% of 5500 of that would have bought books for a course or two. Lots of lenders now waive the origination fee.

Are you sure you got a Stafford? Stafford loans do not require a cosigner.
If this is coming across as an attack on your intellect, it's not. I just feel that far too many students know nothing about financial aid, in all its forms, and that shouldn't be the case.

I've been set straight by her ... on more than one occassion

I would definitely talk to a financial aid advisor ... it may be your last semester, but that isn't a good reason not to take 1 hour to talk to one. You could save 15% or more on car insurance student loans.
