I haven't been there, but I found this online:

Population (year 2000): 7,804
Est. population in July 2004: 7,917

Males: 3,423 (43.9%)
Females: 4,381 (56.1%)

Elevation: 2284 feet

County: Wythe

Land area: 14.3 square miles

Zip code: 24382

Median resident age: 43.8 years
Median household income: $28,043 (year 2000)
Median house value: $85,100 (year 2000)

Races in Wytheville:

White Non-Hispanic (90.3%)
Black (7.2%)
Two or more races (0.9%)
Hispanic (0.8%)

Sounds pretty small, and pretty caucasian.

I've been snowboarding up there. From what I can tell there's absolutely nothing to do there besides that. Sorry buddy.

now wait a second...i'm from clemmons which isn't 10 miles from yadkinville and that ain't true. However, the phone book is only 142 pages. That can't be good. That includes white and yellow pages.

i'll give you that...i wouldn't put it past some people but yadkinville is not a bad place. It is predicted that the area around Yadkinville is going to be very valuable because of the urban sprawl associated with Winston. Let's play a game. you give me a section you think would be in the phone book and i tell you if they have it or don't

Hell greensboro has two big interstates going through it. The downtown is actually pretty Mayberry looking. That can be cool for at least a week.

hmmm

the phenomenon of replacing 'ville' at the end of a city's name with a 'vegas' is exclusive to bumfuck egypt parts of rural SW Virginia and impoverished NC

just call these places what they really are folks, you arent making these dumps any more enticing to visit

suddenly every town is __-vegas

Wytheville sucks ass, its just a shitty quality interstate highway with truck stops on both sides and some trailers, rather unsightly and very boring, I did win $5 on the VA lottery there one time though

in Wytheville's defense, it is a really pretty part of Virginia, being not far from the Jefferson National Forest and sandwiched between 2 distinct ridges - on 77, the one you go through via a tunnel, and then the one that takes you up on that fun curvy part into VA.

Can't say I ever did anything there but stop for gas though.

I'm from southwestern PA, I always go through it on the way home, or to Ohio.

It was rather bleak while i was there. But Lowes is offering a pretty nice job and i wouldn't have to be there more than two years. Plus there is lots of hiking around the area and i'm big on the outdoors. Gas prices averaged 2.35 there. And they have a three story number 2 pencil downtown. Thats worth talking about.

Keep in mind you don't have to live in Wytheville if you don't mind a small commute every day. My finacee and I have been househunting outside the immediate Blacksburg area due to ridiculous pricing on houses.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but does anyone have reccomendations for smaller towns surrounding Roanoke? I'll be working in downtown Roanoke, but want to live closer to cool outdoor activities.
