so i have a goatee and sideburns. I will soon be interviewing for jobs and whatnot. (specifically, teaching)
should i trim them short, shave them off, grow them out, what? 3/29/2006 9:11:24 PM |

Weigh the risk and reward, and make a decision for yourself, dumbass.
It really isn't hard. If you need Dr. WolfWeb for this one, you shouldn't be employed anywhere. 3/29/2006 9:16:07 PM |

save that shit for chit chat.
i'm asking a serious question here. fashions change, and so do attitudes toward different types of facial hair. 3/29/2006 9:17:54 PM |

I asked this same question...
I have full sideburns and a goatee as well, and before my interview I used an electric trimmer to get them as short as possible ("1" setting). I also had my hair cut pretty short so it looked "neat" rather than "just got outta bed".
If you looked well groomed it should help...I got the job too btw 3/29/2006 9:25:24 PM |

shave them off
Better to be safe than sorry. It pays to look professional sometimes and a goatee does not exude professionalism, usually. 3/29/2006 9:37:57 PM |

I'd probably say the same thing, particularly for teaching.

Yeah but teachers don't make $hit. Leave it be. Aren't they desperate for teachers now-a-days? 3/29/2006 11:18:46 PM |

it all depends on the company. I'm applying for post-MBA jobs right now. For things like Coke brand management and IBM leadership programs, I shaved. For botique firms (which is a lot of my focus now), I go with my everyday look - facial hair and burns (thou I keep them both trimmed pretty short with a beard trimmer)...of course these places have VP's wearing jeans to work 3/29/2006 11:38:21 PM |

always best to ere on the side of caution. If the company is cool w/ sideburns and goatee...then just grow them back out. 3/30/2006 9:55:24 AM |

as long as your facial hair is well groomed, it shouldnt be a problem
Quote : | "Facial hair should be very well groomed. The clean-shaven look is usually the best bet." |
but plenty of professional people have facial hair, if yours is well-groomed and you dont get the job, shaving it probably would not have helped.3/30/2006 12:30:05 PM |

yup yup
my long hair and full beard were not a problem in any of my interviews....but then again, im an engineer, so they dont really care what i look like as long as im smart.
had i been looking for a job that had a lot of customer interaction, i probably would have considered shaving and getting a hair cut.3/30/2006 12:37:24 PM |

Shave and remove all piercings, unless you're auditioning for a job with Orange County Choppers or something along those lines. Then it is ok for you to have facial hair/tattoos/piercings/gold teeth/chains You get the picture.... 3/30/2006 1:44:57 PM |

is this thread a joke? in nearly 100% of the cases you're either going to be perceived the same or better with a clean face. the same can't be said for people who rock the hairy look. unless you're trying to teach at lumberjack school (which, if i had to pick one person off of tdub who looks the part, its you) shave it all off and let it regrow when you think its ok. 4/3/2006 4:32:59 PM |

good thing is, it sounds like you're going into a job where you can grow it back if you want to.
i'm doomed to be short-haired and clean-shaven for my entire career.
