So I was going through my old receipts, and found the receipt for my graphics card - that I still use in my main computer.
Its a Matrox G400 MAX. The receipt was from January 2000
Got me wondering, how old is the oldest component of your main computer (ignoring case/floppy/cdrom as those can get prehistoric quickly). 3/30/2006 11:29:26 PM |

Up until a couple months ago when lightning ran in through the cable modem, I had a couple of components from 98 in my box (sound and eth card) 3/30/2006 11:45:03 PM |

My primary HDD (40 GB Seagate) dates back to sometime in 2002. Doesn't worry me too much, as I keep very little data on it, and I care much more about data loss than having to reinstall if the drive dies. Data is on a nice 160 GB Maxtor that isn't even 6 months old.
If you don't rule out case, mine dates to 9/1998. 3/30/2006 11:47:03 PM |

Define main rig? The most powerful or the most used computer? My desk is littered with 3 computers.
The oldest computer I still use has a Diamond viper V770 TNT2 32MB agp card bought in 1999. 3/30/2006 11:50:12 PM |

Yamaha SCSI Burner 24x8x4 ... 1999 Soundblaster live 5.1 ... 2001? 40GB Hard Drive from 2001?
I have a DVD Burner at this point, but I keep it in an external USB case. That Yamaha burner cost me $300 at the time. I try to reuse parts I buy as much as possible. Voodoo3 PCI card is now in my DOS gaming box ... works out very nicely. 3/31/2006 6:35:40 AM |

my new-ish dvd burner shit the bed a few weeks ago and the only spare I had was an 8x cd burner from an 8 yr old dell. So that's the oldest thing in the box, and it shows when burning cds. 15 minutes for a full cd. 3/31/2006 10:10:50 AM |

Sort of. It's been reinstalled many, many times, but when I think about the fact that I'm running my OS on a 4+ year old hard drive, it does make me a bit uncomfortable. I've actually got it mounted in one of those hdd coolers that fits into a 5.25 slot and has 3 little fans blowing directly on it to prevent any heat issues.
Maybe I'm paranoid.

I still use the same Microdyne 10/100 PCI NIC that was in my P133 back in 1996.
It cost like $200 back then. 3/31/2006 11:10:52 AM |

3.5 inch floppy drive from 1996.
I remember getting mad because I couldn't use my 5.25'' floppy disks from my previous computer. I still miss California Games... 3/31/2006 2:11:11 PM |
