Do you believe fear over problems in food is overrated?
A few examples:

beef
mad cow disease

chicken
bird flu

eggs
Salmonella

pork
fears that bird flu will infect them

fish
heavy metals in the waters (mercury) has poisoned them

fruits and veggies
insecticides and herbicides

this is more of a Lounge thread than a Soap Box thread, in my opinion.

beef(mad cow)-->dont eat spinal cord/brain if you're that worried about it
poultry-->dont lick nasal discharge, inhale aerosol droplets
eggs-->try cooking them
pork-->more examples of flu going from humans to pigs than other way around
fish-->not all fish species have high mercury levels
fruits/veggies-->is this even food?

look, you can eat 100 raw eggs, and chances are you will NOT find a trace of samonella. even if you do find an egg with it, it won't hurt you unless you are old or something.

salmonella is rarely present inside an egg

Think of how many times your mom let you lick the bowl when she was making a cake. MMMMMMMMMM raw eggs. I have yet to hear of a kid getting salmonella from eating raw batter. Or an adult, for that matter.
Obviously people should be careful when they cook food. But I'm not going to change my lifestyle because of the media bringing attention to certain diseases.

Fear? Yes
Awareness? No

I'd really like to be assurred if I'm using a public kitchen space (bottom of Lee Hall), the person before me using that space knew what the hell they were doing and wasn't preparing raw chicken on the counter. Or if they did, they sanitized it afterwards.

Any commentary from somebody who has taken a microbial diseases course?

i am really not afraid. unless i hear someone got it from the store i shop at (or in raleigh for that matter)... i am not even scared of cross-contamination in my own kitchen (meats and vegetables)... this is annoying to my food-anal boyfriend

it's just not something that bothers me. but crumbs on the counter does.

It's all overrated except for maybe fish.

And not just heavy metals, there's tons of shit in the oceans that will ultimately get absorbed by the fish. And this sucks because I love fish, and fish is otherwise really damn good for you.

the only thing i'm worried about food is raw chicken...anytime i'm cooking chicken i'm always really anal about cutting veggies first...and using 409 spray to wipe off all the counter tops after. and it's not b/c of bird flu.

bird flu and mad cow don't worry me...when there's a mad cow scare, i'm more along the thinking line of "SCORE! meat's gonna be on sale!!"

the pesticide fear is unsubstantiated. still, washing before you eat fruit is a good habit.

I dont see anything to be afraid of as long as you take some very simple very easy precautions, some of which is a repeat of the above.

Dont eat spinalcord/brain matter.
Make sure it's well cooked to a safe teperature(on damned near everything these days, it isn't hard, any basic cookbook also has these inside)
follow basic safe handling proceedures about washing things beforehand, refridgeration/storage, cross-contamination and clean up, and tossing out out when the date goes bad.

The only reason to worry about pesticides other than making sure you wash all things well, is if you're allergic to them (ran into someone who was), then you might wanna go organic or get one of the fruit /veggie wash things to make extra sure you dont run into it. Otherwise, i wouldnt worry about it.

Oh, and dont eat cans of food that look suctioned in, bloated out, or are badly dented/banged around.

all of those things listed are possible problems, but the biggest problems facing our food supply are companies like monsanto, the patenting of foods, and overuse of pesticides

Thousands of Costa Rican banana workers are rendered infertile by nematicides, and thousands more are at risk of the same fate. In the 1970s, at least 73,230 pesticide poisonings occurred there. These poisonings aren’t just limited to Costa Rica; Honduras and Nicaragua led the world in pesticide illness and death per capita in the 1960s and 70s, and Nicaraguans and Guatemalans have more DDT in their systems than anyone else in the world (Faber 1993a:54).
