I'm going to Brazil for ten weeks on a paid research position this summer. Right now the only details I know is that I'll be studying plants in the Cerrado region of central Brazil, and will be there from June to mid-August. I'd like to go to Sao Paulo or Rio for a week when I'm done with the research, and after that I'll be heading to Santiago, Chile to visit my family (my dad is from there) for a few weeks.Any suggestions regarding Brazil, places to go, things to see, or about people/culture there would be greatly appreciated since it will all be new to me.

Since you're going to the Cerrados, try to go to the waterfalls: Chapada Diamantina, Chapada dos Veadeiros, Chapada dos Guimaraes. Bonito, near Pantanal, is pretty awesome, but it is a little far away from Cerrados. It 's going to be difficult to watch soccer games this summer, since June/July we have World Cup, and all championships there will be paused. If you're there in August, go to Morumbi and watch a game of Sao Paulo Futebol Clube on the Libertadores games. If they keep playing on this championship as far as August, there'll be more than 60.000 people, mostly Sao Paulo Fans. But don't go to a game Sao Paulo vs Corinthians! It's dangerous (80 years of rivalry). Rio and Sao Paulo have great night life, but Rio also has beaches and beautiful girls on the beaches (but be aware that it's going to be winter there, so not much people on the beaches). Since you're going to be on Cerrados, you could visit the Capital city, Brasilia. New city, relatively funny nights, and beautiful girls too. I hope you have fun.

Try to go to Salvador up the coast...the islands in the bay are amazing. Sao Paulo sucked when we were there...it's just a big stinking city - Rio was much much better. There is a resort area about 3 hours from Rio by bus called Buzios - that was freaking sweet. Great beaches, great night life, surfing, sailing, etc.[Edited on April 3, 2006 at 6:39 PM. Reason : .]
