Quote : | " Experts can't explain the solid block of ice that came crashing to the earth, creating a 3-foot hole at an Oakland, Calif., park.
The ice fell at Bushrod Park early Saturday.
No one was injured but there were witnesses who say they saw a flash like a streak and an explosion. Police say the impact knocked turf 20 feet away.
Police say the ice was pure water and not an "ice fall" from a toilet on an airplane. When firefighters pulled out the ice from the hole, it was reportedly the size of the hole at 3-by-3 feet and 2 feet deep.
One expert says sometimes big balls of ice just fall from the sky without any explanation.

If it was pure ice, i'm guessing it was atmospheric and not cosmic. If it were cosmic, it would have been dirty with space dust and mirco-meteoroids. Could be something like super hail...you get some big hail that through the power of a tornado gets ejected into the upper atmosphere on a low orbit where it picks up more ice then eventually slows down and falls.
Hey, it could happen. 4/11/2006 11:07:10 AM |

the flash of light is evidence of atmospheric entry and leads me to beleive it had to have been a piece of a comet. theres no way it was hail. hail is allowed by a strong updraft holding it up for a long time. there was no strong updraft (severe weather) in the area. the moment the hail leaves the area of strong updraft it falls to the ground. chunks of ice this big cant just float around in the atmoshphere and randomly fall with a flash of light.
also. if it was hail it would've been the largest hailstone ever and the current largest one was clearly two that meshed together during a really intense supercell in the central plains. 4/11/2006 5:36:13 PM |

^I like the comet idea...but you have to remember that when an object reenters the earth's atmosphere, it comes into contact with very intense heat... The chunk of ice would been melted in seconds, unless it was VERY VERY VERY large to start with... or if it was encased in a harder substance, such as rock and such...and that melted away leaving the ice behind. That is possible, considering the general idea of a comet is a "dirty snowball".... 4/11/2006 6:34:43 PM |

pretty sure it would have to be a comet...it would have to be substantially HUGE though to take all the heat form entry...about the size of a large house or bigger. The rock on the outside could melt and just leave the ice from a somewhat molten core...but then we are left with the explanation of to where this cosmic water came from?? 4/12/2006 2:38:57 PM |

and you think that astronomers aren't aware of huge things the size of a house floating around in space? Of course they'd pick up something that big making entry. No, I'm still going with a meteorology explaination. 4/12/2006 5:25:18 PM |

It is impossible for it to be a comet. An object the density of ice traveling at comet speeds would make a way way way bigger hole than its actual size.
It had to come from within our own atmosphere to be traveling at speeds that would produce the described impact.
I'm thinking Smath's "ice build up on a plane" theory is a pretty good guess.
Maybe it was the man on the grassy knoll?

what the fuck is a "flash like a streak" anyway?
sounds like a really vague attempt by the witness to try and describe something falling from the sky really fast. ]4/13/2006 1:31:17 PM |
