Jesus who cares about Calipari.

Calipari is a lowlife who would have risked putting us on probation at every step of the way.

Once we got caught he would bolt for greener pastures.

I admit I liked the idea of all the excitement Calipari would bring to the program. He'd make basketball fun to watch in Raleigh again... but in the end let's face it he wasn't a strong long-run solution.

Why does everyone assume because we aren't getting a "big name" that we are getting a nobody.
Bill Self, Rick Pitino, Coach K, Billy Donovan, Bob Knight... these were ALL "nobodies" at one point.

We were going nowhere fast with Herb. Can we get worse with a coaching change? Sure...

We could end up with a worse coach.

But we could also get a guy like Georgia Tech did a few years ago in Paul Hewitt.

We could potentially land a Gary Williams.

There's a reason "big names' are available. It's because they've failed somewhere along the way or they are jumping ship because they are a "grass is always greener" type coach.

Those are not the best solution for NC State.

It's ridiculous to say we are in for a demise because we missed out on TWO fucking coaches.

UNC got their SIXTH choice a few years ago.

It didn't work out and they fired his ass and landed their man.

Maybe the first guy won't work out. Maybe he'll be the next Matt Doherty or Buzz Peterson.

If he is, we'll fire his fucking ass.

No one on this board is 75 years old. There is no reason to act with such desperation.

You don't like what you've seen from NC State basketball the last week? Fine. Now imagine how I've felt the past 5 years when I didn't like what I saw from NC State basketball.

Look at it this way, our program is light years closer to making a Final Four today (4-12-06) than it was two weeks ago when Herb was at the helm.

Quote :
"Calipari Down, Fans Cold on Brady (10pm Update)

John Calipari is staying at Memphis.

With that comes the conclusion of the John Calipari 2006 Contract Renegotiation Tour Ultimately, the guy ended up being the slimeball that so many people warned us that he was.

We don’t express these sentiments out of frustration for Calipari’s rejection of NC State. We say this because of they way that all of this went down. We also hope that our leaders at NC State take advantage of the opportunity to publicly call out Calipari for his behavior during the conversations - what the hell do you have to lose?

We aren’t going too much of our breath on the media whore, but we are going to do some re-capping for you so that you know the truth:

*

Last week as NC State was engaged in legitimate conversations with Rick Barnes, John Calipari had multiple “friends” contact various NC State people expressing Calipari’s significant interest in the NC State job.
*

As we reported, the NC State search committee doesn’t seem to multi-task and explore conversations with more than one coach at a time and was therefore ignoring Calipari’s overtures This only served to raise the chatter on Calipari’s interest and the intensity in which his representatives were pushing Wolfpackers.
*

After Barnes and State parted ways, the conversations finally turned to Calipari heading into the weekend at the urging of many people who were assured by “Cal’s people” that Calipari was chomping at the bit for the job.
*

You know most of the developments by following our reports here. What you don’t know is how “committed” Calipari indicated that he was to the NC State search committee. From every source with whom we have spoken, Calipari talked the talk and to walked the walk that (paraphrased) “money was not an issue as he was attracted to the sleeping giant at NC State and wanted to compete in the ACC against the best”.
*

Unfortunately, Calipari’s destructive wake also includes the carcasses of many prominent and valuable Wolfpack Club members who stuck their neck out for him in the process.
*

Confirmation is blurry on a report that a verbal agreement was reached with Calipari during Sunday’s meeting. The plan was for Calipari to visit Raleigh on Monday night (as he did) and at that point he would be presented a formal offer which he indicated that he would accept. Obviously, Calipari had engaged in such detailed negotiations that the offer was able to be drawn.
*

We started smelling a rat yesterday afternoon. Here is why — nobody from NC State leaked Calipari’s visit to the media. When Andy Katz reported Calipari was going to visit Raleigh in the middle of Monday afternoon, we started being very concerned. Calipari’s only reason to leak the news (which is what we presume happened) was to keep Memphis’ wheels rolling.
*

If what Calipari had been telling NC State was true…then it wasn’t going to matter what Memphis ultimately counter-offered. This is why the leak was concerning. There was a reason for it. Now, we know the reason for it.
*

You have to realize, John Calipari initiated contact with NC State. John Calipari pursued NC State. John Calipari verbally committed to NC State. John Calipari lied to everyone.
*

Many fans are trying to blame this on Lee Fowler. We don’t think that is fair. The search committee swung for the fences, and lost. It sucks. John Calipari lied, and lied, and lied some more. Maybe you can criticize Fowler for the manner in which the conversations were executed (is - waiting until late in the week, getting caught by the media, etc), but you cannot criticize Fowler for trying.
*

Additionally, you can’t criticize any Wolfpackers for getting caught in Calipari’s trap. Where we come from, people don’t behave this way.
*

Dave Glenn’s blog has an evening update which includes an interesting tidbit:

A league source with knowledge of the situation told ACCSports.com at 3 p.m. that ACC associate commissioner Fred Barakat, who has been assisting the Wolfpack with its search, sounded “angry” and “upset” when he reported his findings that Memphis and Calipari appeared to be on the verge of a new agreement. The league source said Barakat and “everyone” at State had been extremely optimistic about landing Calipari when the day began"

Yeah...especially now that we have No Coach (after two utterly embarassing attempts), Bethel, Bennerman & Evtimov graduated, Simmons is bailing to go Pro way too early, our recruits are decomitting, our fan base is in shambles, we are now turning our anger towards our Athletic Director.

yup, I'd say we are lookin pretty good right about now.

Your hate for Sendek makes you look completely uninformed from a holistic stanpoint of our University's situation.

Calipari used us for a better offer.

Boo fucking hoo.

Tell the wolfpack club to grow the fuck up.

They are crying like little school girls.

They stuck their neck out for Calipari? What the fuck could that possibly entail?

Lee Fowler spent a few hours on the phone? Who gives a fuck that's his job.

I don't blame Lee Fowler at all. He did what he was supposed to do. He tried to hire a coach.

It turns out he was duped.

Who the fuck cares. We wasted two days. Get a goddam life and stop crying.

I've seen 6 year olds get less emotional over Uno games when someone plays a Wild Card Draw Four than this.

If I went to Food Lion right now I'd fully expect their to be empty shelves in the tampon aisle.

if you are frustrated with other threads, fine, but i just dont think anybody is saying anything requiring multiple boxes of tampons on this thread

How was Rick Barnes embarrassing? We almost lured a top-notch coach who was in an ideal situation.

The Calipari ordeal said a lot more about him than it did about us.

No way Simmons goes pro if Herb stays. It would be unfathomable for a player to go pro early or transfer during the Sendek regime.

One recruit has re-opened his recruiting. This is the part where I mention he wouldn't have been utilized well by Sendek anyway and everyone says "yeah thats true".

The whole thing is nothing but sour grapes and whining. It's completely pathetic. It's the kind of email I might write to an ex-girlfriend if I drank a 12 pack and struck out with a fat girl that night.

It's one thing to think Calipari is a cock.

It's completely overboard to cry about and make a list of all the "wrongs" he committed. Get a life.

I've heard this shit before. Hey rally, just put "insert name here ________ " and copy and paste this for every coach that we help get a raise. Then we can get another unproven mid-major coach who can "bring fire" into the program. WOOOOOTTTT!!!!

I dont understand why everyone is so concerned with getting a "Name" coach.

Plenty of big "names" have gone places and done jack shit.

I want a good coach that won't be a pussy or put us on probation. I dont care what his name is."

Quote :

Was this a joke? Paul Hewitt has already taken Georgia Tech to a National Championship game and an ACC Championship game. GT was every bit as down when he took over as NC State was when Herb took over. Look at Hewitt's results his first ~6-7 years compared to Herb's and then get back to me.

GT lost all five starters from last year dude. What were they supposed to do? Are you going to say they didn't look pretty damn good this year for a team who didnt return a starter? They are a very quality program right now and they have RESULTS to show for it.

Quote :
"Fucking awesome. So that's 13 years before we get to another Final Four??? GREAT. I can't wait."

Now, you're just being ridiculous. Maryland was coming off probation when Williams took over and he built them into one of the best programs in the nation. It took him a little while to get over some early tournament struggles but he has two final fours and a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. He did this despite landing subpar recruits for nearly a decade. There are people on this board who defended Herb to the death despite us making ONE sweet 16 appearance in ten years. And that appearance was absolutely dreadful. Thinking about that game makes me want to throw up in my mouth. And now you're going to say he compares favorably to the guy with ACC AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS?

Hell, Duke-Maryland was one of the premeire rivalries in the country for a few seasons. Not some 3rd-rate one-sided "rivalry" like State-UNC. We're talking about a rivalry that *gasps* garners national attention. When I think of a rivalry I dont think about Mike Hogewood or WRAL. UNC-State is nothing more than a lead story on local news.

Quote :
"WE'RE NOT FUCKING UNC...YOU ARE AN IDIOT FOR EVEN USING THEIR SITUATION AS AN EXAMPLE...THEY WERE LIGHT YEARS AHEAD OF US AS PROGRAM WHEN THEY FUCKED UP AND HIRED DOHERTY."

Well you really missed the boat here. The caps lock just accentuates how far off you are. If UNC (a better program than we are) couldn't get their first, second, third, fourth, or fifth choice then why is it so degrading that we missed our first two targets?

Would it have been better to ignore Barnes/Calipari and settled right off the bat for a lesser coach just so we could say we landed the first guy we went after? You know WHY these guys are our first choices? Because they are good coaches. And believe it or not, other programs are interested in retaining these guys too. The fact that elite coaches are looking so seriously at our position proves how promising our situation truly is.

Also, UNC was in no way LIGHT YEARS ahead of us at the time. They were coming off some down seasons. They were uninspiring in '99 (Weber State??), poor in 2000 (masked by one upset over Stanford, and a chance to play Tulsa(!!!) in the elite 8), and experienced a total collapse in 2001 by losing on five consecutive Sundays to close the season.

Were they better? Sure. Light years? Nope.

Quote :
"We get rid of a guy who got us to 5 straight tourneys and was bringing in more McDAA's for a guy who might not work out."

Well yeah. It's kinda like people who get an accounting degree and then pursue their true professional goals. If it doesn't work out, you can always fall back on the accounting degree. Herb is not an elite coach, he is easily replaceable. If our change of plans doesn't work out, we can always fall back on a 'safe' play with limited potential like Herb Sendek.

Quote :
"Look at it this way...we're proper fucked"

Assuming we get Cedric Simmons back we have the best starting lineup in the fucking ACC returning.

How in gods name does that make us fucked?

If anythign you should be excited about the possibility of a coach coming in that is willing to USE our talent instead of squander it.

Well if he's gone then he's gone.

We still have potentially the best starting lineup in the ACC returning if you replace Simmons with (a hopefully improved) Brackman or McCauley.

If we lose Simmons it sucks, no way around it.

Simmons isn't easily replaceable like Sendek.

It doesn't mean the program is in shambles.

Simmons had a maximum of one more year in Raleigh anyway.

And before you even try to blame Simmons departure on Herb leaving make sure you have a damn good reason for Powell, Wilkens, Williams, Harrington, Bean, MOD, Flatt, SImons, etc all leaving during Sendek's tenure.

People leave. It happens.

Particularly, when millions of dollars are on the line.

If ANYTHING, you should be pissed at Herb Sendek for not turning a potential first round draft pick into an ALL-ACC player. I don't think Simmons could have possibly been more underutilized on offense this season.

Seeing that they did an investigation into it and didn't find anything on him...I'd guess he didn't. I don't really know why Calipari would want Camby to talk to an agent anyways...I would want to keep the national player of the year for his senior year if I were a coach. But I forget that you're rally...you know everything.

"Was this a joke? Paul Hewitt has already taken Georgia Tech to a National Championship game and an ACC Championship game."

Since you cried last time, I'll do my best to hit most of the points this time. Alright Paul Hewitt, congratulations. I still say that he got one of the easiest roads to the Final Four that year. And just because a coach makes the Final 4 doesn't mean I want him. I do not want John Brady, and he won the SEC and made the Final 4. But again...congrats Paul. Also...did you say Paul made an ACC championship game?? That's remarkable. I think one of our recent coaches made a couple of those. I could be wrong though. Also, Hewitt's never finished higher than tied for 3rd in the ACC.

Quote :
"GT was every bit as down when he took over as NC State was when Herb took over."

Now you look dumb. GT was 5th and 8th the two years prior to Hewitt getting their. They weren't exactly establishing the "Bobby Cremins Invitational." He had Alvin Jones (good ACC center), Tony Akins (good ACC point guard), and Marvin Lewis (good ACC shooting guard) in his first year. Not exactly the plethora of talent we had at State in Herb's first years, but it was alright.

THEY DIDN'T MAKE THE NIT. But to be honest...they looked alright. Young, talented, athletic. They'll be good in the future. They'll be 3-4 in the ACC...but that's about it. Nothing I would be going crazy for over here at State.

Really?? You mean, kind of like the semi-probation we were put on when V left?? The one that made Les raise the academic standards and recruit all these shitty players and continue to make our program the worst in the ACC when Herb got here?? Sounds like a pretty similar situation to me.

Early tournament struggles?? You don't say?? That reminds me of someone. And what year did he get to his final four again?? The 13th year?? I was just checking, because I forgot. I think Gary Williams is a good coach, but he's a bad example to use when you're in our situation. He's also become a pretty shitty recruiter.

I probably missed your point, but I don't really see what your point was. I guess I should make my point a little more clear. WE CAN'T AFFORD TO DO WHAT UNC DID. We can't afford to hire a Matt Doherty and put our program into another tailspin. We don't have Roy Williams waiting in the wing. If you think it's hard getting a good coach in now with the talent we have and the 5 straight tourney's, think how hard it will be after we've run off 2 straight coaches and the talent in the cupboard is again bare.

And UNC was light years ahead of us as a PROGRAM, they had actually won a national championship that some recruits could still remember and had still been putting all-stars in the NBA. We still hadn't made the NCAA tourney in about 10 years at that time, yet they still had a streak of about 20 or so years. But that's not light years ahead....

"Well yeah. It's kinda like people who get an accounting degree and then pursue their true professional goals. If it doesn't work out, you can always fall back on the accounting degree. Herb is not an elite coach, he is easily replaceable."

This is one point I'll concede to you...but we still have differen't opinions. I was still dissapointed with how the year ended and dissappointed with 1 sweet 16 in 10 years. But we did tweak our offense a little this year. We've never run this much before, and we were starting to throw it down low to Cedric like we did with Josh Powell in his sophomore year. I had a little bit of hope with Evtimov gone that Sendek would keep tweaking the offense. In my opinion (which is where it differs from yours), I was still slightly optimistic that our program would continue to progress and we would start to go deeper in the tourney and maybe pull an ACC championship every now and then.

And I don't think Herb is that easily replaceable. Big names like Barnes, Calipari, and Wright would be good replacements. But replacing Herb with another unproven midmajor is not a good replacement. We've got a guy who has shown he can stay in the top 4 of the ACC, recruit McDAAs, and consistently make the tourney. Then you had hopes of going far in the tourney. Now we're going back to hoping we can make the tourney again if we get a coach on our B-list.

Oh well...I have a feeling we'll continue to agree to disagree. I wasn't pissed that we ended up running Herb off. I was slightly optimistic that we could bring Barnes back home or give Calipari enough money to make him come here. Now I'm starting to get pissed. We've lost potential great recruits and possibly losing our only chance at a tourney big next year in Cedric. Also I'm hearing that we're going hard after John Brady...which is scary. But even if he falls through, it's on to the mid-majors. I'll be satisfied if we get Gillispie, and that's it.

But right now...I don't see how anyone can look at this program in a positive light.

^^Barnes didn't use us for a raise, and every indication is that he seriously considered moving here.
