Well, after sitting without a cupola for over half a century, the university restored it to its former glory this morning. This is what the original quad looked like - with the cupola in the 1940sdoes anyone have a new pic of the nice shiny new one that they took today? The restored cupola is a perfect copy of the orignal. Finally - something right.

I shot video of them lifting it on.The repro cupola is actually a little shorter than the original to reduce wind resistance which is what blew the other one off in 1954 (hurrcane hazel, I think)

it looks great

nice!so is someone gonna get fired for making a building aesthetically pleasing?
4/13/2006 9:13:56 PM
Let's hope not! I took some pics with my camera phone after work--here are a few. I'll have to go back and take some higher-quality ones with my actual camera at some point. Finally, the building looks complete again. I was annoyed when, after doing all the restoration, upgrades, and new construction at the quad, that they had neglected what could have been the biggest aesthetic improvement of all--quite happy to say that I spoke too soon. Good job.Looking at my pictures versus the historical one, I see what you ^^^ mean about the new one being a little smaller. The body is shorter, and the copper "hat" isn't quite as steep. I actually think the current one looks slightly more in scale with the rest of the building though...and design-wise it's quite correct. [Edited on April 14, 2006 at 12:08 AM. Reason : size]

I must've been gone for a long time... what building is that? I'm not even recognizing where it would be...

The building is Berry Hall. It's a dorm (was all-female, probably not the case anymore) on the Honors Quad. Sits in between Thompson Theater and Pullen Park. If you know where the quad c-store used to be, and where they built a new "commons" building to replace it, it's behind there. Also very close to Clark Dining Hall. It was kinda easy to miss--just another 3-story brick building, albeit a very old one (1924). It's a bit more distinctive now with the cupola restored.

^It was all female from the 60's until this year, and before then, it was all male. And the new cupola looks really, really good.

very nice.can someone post pics of this new "commons building" too? the last thing i remember is seeing the c-store being torn down.

^^^^ Commons Building Front...and Back. It's a really nice building. It has a c-store, computer lab, a couple of meeting rooms, and there's a balcony on the back (at least I think that's what it is) to match the one on Berry.
