it is that to a certain extent, but then plenty of people who claim to have basketball as their favorite sport dont like the nba. many people love world cup soccer but cant stand mls, etc.

^^^^ NASCAR's ratings are so high because they have so few events each week. Granted, it's easily more popular than any sports league other than the NFL, NBA, and MLB, but the numbers are a bit misleading.

I don't think college sports are better, I just realize that I have way more of an attachment to State than I do to any pro team.

A State game can make or break my week. A Panthers win? Eh, it's cool, but it doesn't matter nearly as much to me.
