if anyone is smart they won't

IF the bird flu comes to america and it's as deadly as the media wants us to think, that means it will kill quick but it won't be able to spread fast (due to it killing off it's victims quickly)...however, if it spreads like crazy, then it's not that deadly...

in reality, if you want as few people affected as possible, then you want the virus to be very deadly

in reality chill out about the bird flu.
the hippies that wanted "free range" birds are the ones you got to watch out for
why is it not in america?

our "cruel" housing of thousands of birds in a "shed".

People never stop to think about shit like that. Enclosed raising of birds greatly reduces our risk of having a problem with bird flu. The media just doesn't want you to know that, because on the next channel they are reporting on how fucking cruel those bastards are that have "chicken houses"

moron. bird flu takes a week or two to kill and is highly contagious for a good solid 3-4 days during its incubation while the victim might only feel slightly under the weather.

If you're going to dismiss the threat of bird flu, at least use some actual thought.

^i was trying to say that depending on how you look at it, it would be good for this virus to kill quickly....the media is giving the impression that after one gets the virus, they will die in 48 hours and it will spread across the counry in less than a week, which would be damn near impossible

actually, i was just reading paper that disputes that. it arguest that cramming all of your birds in a huge warehouse just causes diseases to evolve and spread more quickly... especially if you're grinding up their bedding, feathers, and feces to mix in their feed, and then shipping these birds all over the world. here's an excerpt:

Quote :
"The highly pathogenic strains of bird flu develop in poultry, most likely in poultry exposed to milder strains that live naturally in wild bird populations. Within crowded poultry operations, the mild virus evolves rapidly towards more pathogenic and highly transmissible forms, capable of jumping species and spreading back into wild birds, which are defenseless against the new strain. In this sense, H5N1 is a poultry virus killing wild birds, not the other way around. The same argument holds for small-scale poultry production. Bird flu does not evolve to highly pathogenic forms in backyard poultry operations, where low-density and genetic diversity keep the viral load to low levels. Backyard poultry are the victims of bird flu strains brought in from elsewhere."

Raising your birds in chicken houses decreases the risk of spearding the disease not increaseing it. To get the virus in the birds they have to come into contact with other birds. In a house they are closed off from other animals. The only people that go in are the farmer and the route supervisor. The bedding and waste is cleaned out of the house after each flock and is spread on fields for fertilizer. The blood and feathers of birds are ground up and used for protein in feed. If the flu virus affected a house the company would kill all the birds and make the farmer clean out the house. there are lots of houses that supply a plant one set of houses will not cause any damage. The birds are checked each week by professionals and if their is a spike in the death rate birds are culled and examined. There is nothing wrong with cows or chickens or pigs. The media just likes to scare people.

"1 000s quarantined in Bucharest
22/05/2006 22:54 - (SA)

Bucharest - About 13 000 people were quarantined in the Romanian capital on Monday as troops and police sealed off streets in response to the city's second bird-flu outbreak, said officials.

The mayor of the southern fourth district, Adrian Inimaroiu, said residents would be cut off and all businesses in the area would be closed during the quarantine period of up to three weeks.

The move came after the agriculture ministry earlier on Monday confirmed the presence of the H5 bird-flu virus in dead chickens found in the neighbourhood, the latest of dozens of outbreaks of avian flu in Romania this spring.

Inimaroiu said, urging residents to stay calm, that "about 40 streets have been blocked" in the Luica quarter.

He said the quarantine would last for "a period of a week to 21 days and all the institutions in this quarter will be closed".

"About 2 500 birds from this area will be slaughtered as rapidly as possible," said the mayor.

A neighbourhood on the northern outskirts of the capital was put under quarantine on Sunday evening with fences blocking a dozen streets and police preventing anyone from going in or out, except for medical emergencies."
