So, for no other reason than I want to both learn how to solder and get some practical experience with electronics (I"m hoping I can grasp the concepts so I can do shit with them better that way, no i'm not an EE i'm just intersted) both building them and then fiddling with programmable chips etc.......

Anyone have any recommendations for a project that's both appropriate for a beginner, and preferrably shiney/nifty?

More mechanical minded things as opposed to chips n boards are okay too.
