I just heard about this: http://store.mam-a-store.com/standard---archive-gold.html
Gold-archiving CDR/DVDR media.
any thoughts on if this is a good/bad idea?

How much data are you looking to archive and how accessable do you need it? 4/26/2006 2:36:21 PM |

I can build you a 6.5TB RAID 3 array for under a dollar a gigabyte. 4/26/2006 2:48:09 PM |

ah - sorry i wasn't clear enough on this.
a faculty member was wondering about this purchase for individual professors to backup/store their data.
in this case, a tape-backup system (or otherwise) that requires additional hardware isn't an option.

do you think these things are legit? or kinda gimmicky?
it would seem dumb to back stuff up on CDR when DVDR is available, right?

I personally don't trust CD/DVD media when it comes to backups.
Does the university you are at not offer a network backup service at a nominal cost per year? 4/26/2006 6:05:38 PM |

this is NCSU-related, and it would most likely be pretty small-scale. i hadn't thought about that, thanks
