Bob Davie further proved that he is a moron. Here's his preseason top 5:

5. Arizona State
4. Louisville
3. Texas
2. Oklahoma
1. Florida

Arizona State? Really!?

Louisville? i thought pretty much everyone was saying WVU was going to win the Big East again and be a top 5 team.

also wouldn't Oklahoma and Texas, seeing how they are in the same conference and division knock one of the other out of contention for a top 5 ranking?

And why exactly couldn't the best 2 teams be in the same conference?

I mean Texas beat USC last year, so does that mean they couldn't have been a top team?

it's all numbers. the BCS computers would have it were once one of them loses to the other, another major conference team or two would jump ahead. say UF is the top team, and they're from the SEC. well say Louisville is from the Big East, and then ASU is the Pac-10 member. well more than likely after their game, the Big Ten and ACC front runners will leap the team that lost. say they are the true #2 and #3 teams in the nation, but that wouldn't show up b/c of the calculation of all the numbers by the BCS system.

also one would go to the Big 12 championship game while the other won't. it's just stupid and highly unlikely to say that both of those teams would be in the top 3 let alone top 5 at the end of the year.

Well both of them ending up in the top 5 is quite different from both teams appearing to be in the top 5. Sure one of them will lose, but you don't know which, so you have to give both the benefit of the doubt.

If OU goes 12-0 & UT goes 11-1 is UT still not a top 5, only because they had a marginal loss to the top team in the country?

In 2004 OU & UT both finished in the top 5.

UT would have a good chance at an at-large BCS bid, but the fact that they wouldn't be in th Big 12 Championship game would hurt them. they would only have a chance at two at large bids. say ND gets one of those, just b/c well they're ND and have that special contract with the BCS. so say it comes down to a situation like we saw a couple of years ago where we had a 1 loss Cal team and a 1 loss Texas team, but instead of Cal we put in a 1 loss Miami team that loss to FSU in the ACC championship game. i'm willing to bet that Miami would probably get that at-large bid. this is all just a possible scenario that is highly likely in today's college football world. one very good team on the outside looking in. predictions are made for how the teams will end the season, not were they will be during certain parts of the season.

well the 2004-2005 season wouldn't have been that way had Mack Brown not lobbyed hard for Texas to get into the Rose Bowl, instead of Cal getting into it.

note i'm not saying it can't happen, i'm just saying that it's not a bet that one should take, for it is higly unlikely nowadays.

^Holy shit. And I thought Chuck's schedule's were cake.

The only team on that list that I wouldn't bet on us against is Louisville. And quite honestly, we almost could hang with them.

I also wonder on some of the rankings people put out so early, whether they are ranking them based on what they think the teams record will be, or which teams are the best.

not on Davie's list anyway. Herb has OSU at #2 behind ND, and Mark May didn't have OSU in his top 5, but he predicted OSU vs WV for the title.

I think OSU's offense is going to be fucking great, but the defense is VERY young.
