I have a 2002 Honda Accord SE with about 98K miles on it. Just bought it a month ago and it runs great. My dad and I were talking in the car one day about changing the oil every 3000 miles. My dad's buddy (also in the car) chimes in about how the owner's manuel says you only need to change it every 7500 miles, which is a HUGE difference.

I'm going to go ahead and change it (it's been 3K miles), but any of you guys think I should wait? Also the manuel says to use 5W-20, but my dad has 5W-30 so fuck it...I'll just use what I don't have to pay for

It's a honda. It would probably run fine if you used molasses instead of oil. They won't die.

even with the shittiest oil money can buy, i wouldn't change it before 5,000 miles. i use the new Mobil1 Extended Performance synthetic oil and I change it at 15,000 miles.

mobil1 now offers the new E.P. oil filter as well. they recommend changing it at the same 15K interval as their oil.

Is the Mobil 1 EP really good for 15K miles like they advertised? I've just put it in my mom's car.

^yea, I was thinking of the same thing. I would think that if you change the filter without draining the oil first, the oil would pour out when you remove the filter.

I've never done it before but doesn't the oil go to the OIL PAN when the engine is turned off? The oil filter is (on every car I've seen) located well above the oil pan. So there'd be just as much oil in the filter if you didn't drain it than if you drain the oil from the car.

i only lose about a pint changing the filter, which aint much considering it holds 7 quarts, oh and no, you dont lose all the oil by changing the filter, just what is left in the block that doesnt drain back.

yeah my oil filter is on the front of my block, or side whatever since it's a fwd platform and even when i drain the oil out a shit load leaks out of the block.

[Edited on May 1, 2006 at 1:30 AM. Reason : car has 150k someone said at that mileage it doesnt matter, i would think it matters more?]

I only go 5k on Mobil 1, but I only drive about 10K per year. So that equals about a 6-month change interval, in mostly city stop-and-go short trip driving, by which time I figure I really ought to give the engine some fresh oil.

Am I being paranoid? Or is 6 months too long, regardless of mileage? Though my car is old ('96 Lincoln Mark VIII), it only has 62K miles and runs flawlessly. So I want to keep the engine in as good shape as I can.

why wouldn't it be? They make it. They could say it would be good for 7.5K and sell more.

i thought that mileage was only part of the equation anyways - b/c time is a big issue if it goes over ~5months due to the breakdown of oil

most newer cars don't advise using synthetic oil until at least 10k and some up to 20k i believe

do synthetic oils not breakdown like dino oils?

What, you don't like money?

My car has 251,000 miles on it. I use Mobil 1 and last changed the oil July '05. Since then I've put less than 8k miles on the car, but will probably swap the filter sometime soon.

I've been using mobil 1 5w20 in my new truck and changing it at 5k like the manual says at least until the warranty runs out. I don't know what I'll do after the 36k warranty is over.

i didnt read all the above, but to give you an idea about the oil, my vette calculates oil life left based on driving conditions, blah blah formulas and shit. I dont run my car very hard, often, and it had me go around 10k before it got to 10%, when i changed it. Unless you pull fuckin boats and shit all the time, less than 8-10k is wastin money

it is still only a rough estimate.. the only true way to know how much life you have left in your oil is to send it to a lab (like the one in the link i posted above) and have them do a TBN test.. it's only 20 bucks for them to test trace metals/elements in your oil and an extra 10 for the TBN test.
