Once again, douche bag thinks he knows it all
Quote : | " Until Saturday, you thought North Carolina State's search for a basketball coach was going badly. You thought wrong.
Until Saturday, N.C. State's search was going beautifully. The Wolfpack hadn't done anything smart like hire one of the ACC-ready head coaches in their own state, but they hadn't done anything irreparably stupid, either.
Like hiring Sidney Lowe.
Nothing against Sidney Lowe, but N.C. State isn't the job for him. (Getty Images) Then comes Saturday. Lowe is expected to be introduced at a news conference on campus. To save everyone time, Wolfpack officials were expected to supply the media with crates of rotten tomatoes to hurl -- rhymes with Thurl, a former N.C. State teammate -- at Lowe.
In hiring Lowe, an assistant with the Detroit Pistons, N.C. State has hired a coach who has:
1. Never coached in college. 2. Been fired twice as a head coach in the NBA, with one of the worst records (79-218) in league history. 3. Presumably won't join N.C. State full time until the Pistons are eliminated from the NBA playoffs, which -- unless Lowe starts coaching the team -- won't happen until late June. 4. Doesn't have a college degree. 5. Will be getting that degree from a small school in Virginia. Apparently this is an online or mail-order degree, because Lowe reportedly will finish up in June despite spending the entire semester with the Pistons.
That about covers it.
On the bright side, Lowe does have the following going for him:
1. Um. 2. I'm thinking. 3. Check?
Lowe played on N.C. State's national championship team in 1983, which makes him qualified to appear at autograph shows in the greater Raleigh area. It does not make him qualified to assume control of the most -- not one of the most, but the most -- challenging job in the ACC.
North Carolina State isn't a place for on-the-job training. It's not a place for a patronage hire, which Lowe is. Supporters of this hire, ask yourself one question and try, please, to be objective when you answer it:
Of the more than 50 Division I schools with open jobs this spring, how many would have hired Sidney Lowe?
I'm thinking Morgan State, maybe, although Butch Beard bombed so badly that Morgan State might have shied away from another NBA washout. I'm thinking a small school like Texas-Arlington or Furman, for the jolt of name recognition a former NBA player and coach would bring.
« Back · 1 · 2
Forget Oklahoma or Missouri or Indiana. Sidney Lowe's application to those schools would have ended in that round, metal file below the desk, the one where Kelvin Sampson keeps his NCAA rulebook.
But how about mid-level jobs like SMU, UAB or Manhattan? Do you think Sidney Lowe, without a degree or college experience but with a 79-218 record as an NBA head coach, would have gotten any of those jobs?
Of course not. And if he'd played in 1983 for UCLA and not N.C. State, he wouldn't have this job either. N.C. State needs someone who can recruit from the national top 100 menu, someone who can sleuth out similarly skilled recruits from the top 500 menu, and someone who can develop a team that can compete with Duke and North Carolina.
N.C. State doesn't need someone whose only qualification was that he played alongside Thurl Bailey on the Wolfpack's 1983 national championship team.
Sad thing is, this isn't Sidney Lowe's fault. You don't blame a guy for trying to get a good job. Ambition is good. Confidence is better. Sidney Lowe isn't the problem here. Lee Fowler is.
After failing to land dream hires Rick Barnes and John Calipari, or solid fall-back candidate John Beilein, or April Fools' Day joke Steve Lavin (and I like you, Steve), Fowler began floating names like trial balloons. Fowler wasn't trying to win basketball games. He was trying to win the news conference. Phil Ford's name got floated. Mike Brey. Sean Miller. Jim Les. Those names weren't embraced by Wolfpack Nation, so Fowler sent up another balloon.
Sidney Lowe?
Wolfpack fans were ambivalent about Lowe. Considering how badly this search has been botched, considering the ire that has been rightfully raised by Wolfpack fans, ambivalence was progress.
Congratulations, Sidney Lowe. You're hired.

I think this entire article can be summed up in that excerpt. How does he know that Lowe hasnt been pulling double duty and studying his ass off while also asst. coaching the pistons? How does this guy know anything that he wrote in the article? This is incorrect. He resigned from the Grizzlies.
Let's face it, the teams he coached were COMPLETE SHIT.
Phil Jackson could not have won with those 2 teams.

Since when did Gregg Doyel become the Edward Murrow of sports journalism? He's always been an ass, but within the last year or so he's really amped it up. I still remember the time he said the state of kentucky had more college basketball prestiage then NC. whatever. 5/5/2006 2:06:14 PM |

I meant as far as going out of the way to be objective. Yes I know Murrow was a legend. Murrow did it right but Doyel comes across as a sports talk radio hack. Good Night and Good Luck was a damn good movie by the way. 5/5/2006 2:11:15 PM |

Thursday, May 04, 2006 Sidney Lowe to Raleigh... While Pistons assistant Sidney Lowe's decision to become the head coach at his alma mater (N C State) might have made some shake their heads in disbelief, his decision made a lot of sense.
Having spent five years in the ACC, four of which involved covering N.C. State, I understand all too well how Sidney got to this point.
Raleigh, N.C. is one of the more beautiful cities in the south, and to be frank, there have been days (usually around November, December and January) when I've really missed the place.
And if you love basketball in its purest form, there's not a better part of the country to be a fan (or a coach) in than the ACC.
However, while most schools have one really heated rivarly, N.C. State has two - North Carolina and Duke - who are less than 20 minutes away. He understands this dynamic better than most, which is why I think he'll have a much better chance of succeeding than someone without N.C.State or ACC ties.
He returns to a place where he enjoyed unbelievable success, and has kept close ties with many of the people in the area. Lowe was well-liked when he played, and the supporters of NCState have always had a soft spot for him.
I wish him the best of luck, because he knows better than most, he'll need some in order to get that program to the level it was at when he played. " |
