i'd love a new technology race with Russia... seems to have worked out pretty well for us last time... and could take the blinders off of our tech industry... 5/5/2006 7:32:29 PM |

yes! it is very necessary that we stockpile warheads and sink ourselves further into debt to combat some tough talk at this juncture! 5/5/2006 7:54:17 PM |

Josh
you're out of your element.
and I don't think there's any mention of Russia necessarily being in a Cold War "with us"
it's definitely more of a broad thing, indirectly involving them with us. 5/6/2006 1:11:15 AM |

The question is absurd, but as along as we're supposing:
Russia couldn't fuck with the US.
Like, seriously, I think that's what's frightening. We have enough nukes to blow up the entire world. 5/7/2006 1:39:36 AM |

The concept of a cold war has always weirded me out. Once it becomes a real war with direct combat, it can't be a cold war anymore.

Here are recent comments from Putin, as stated in todays N&O-
Quote : | ""MOSCOW - President Vladimir V. Putin, in a blunt response to U.S. criticism of his domestic and foreign policies, declared Wednesday that Russia will boost its military strength to ensure its ability to resist foreign pressure.
In an annual address to parliament, Putin said new nuclear and high-precision weapons will enable his country to maintain a strategic balance with the United States, which he compared to a wolf -- the arch-villain of Russian fairy tales."
"Putin's comments did not seem to signal a return to Cold War hostility so much as a bid by an increasingly self-confident Russia to engage in tough bargaining on international issues and to reject interference in its domestic politics.
"We have slipped toward Cold War rhetoric quite a while ago, and such passages in Putin's speech are nothing new in that sense," said Georgy Satarov, president of the INDEM Foundation, a Moscow think tank that aims to promote democratic values."" |
I don't think that we are going to enter a new cold war with Russia. In all reality I don't think the Cold war ever really ended; sure the Soviet Union collapsed, numerous treaties have been signed, nuclear stockpiles reduced, and tensions eased and downplayed, but, there is still a nuclear parity that exists between Russia and the US, im sure we still have tens of thousands of warheads aimed in their direction, and vice-versa. If there was no real threat left, im sure the National Missile Defense project would have almost dissapeared. Our relations with Russia never really became much more diplomatic then they were with the Soviet Union, and as current events show, they are slipping even further. Despite our recent focus on terrorism, and the middle east as our primary objective; the threat with Russia, while lessened, is still there, and tensions still icy. However because of the lack of Russian economic stablility and dominance, the current state of the cold war will not lend itself to new technological breakthroughs, and it will pretty much remain an icy tension.5/12/2006 2:04:53 AM |
