Damn, good find on the sign! I didn't know it was that old...in 1939 that tunnel must have led from basically nowhere to nowhere. Though I guess some of the south campus dorms and Reynolds were either in construction or planned...

supposedly the brick is covered with a special chemical that allows paint to be hosed off

that looks awesome

please, if you're going to paint it, KEEP THE PAINT INSIDE THE TUNNEL

why would you want to mess up how nice it looks now with the bricks on the outside?

the becton/berry/bagwell dorm group that was renovated were also pub works admin buildings. I helped put the levators into those dorms, you would not beleive how much old stuff had to be left in place and sealed up during asbestos removal.

wait, so the stairs are gone on the brickyard side? from the pictures, it looks like they levelled it, and layed bricks. if so, that's pretty money. those stairs sucked balls. then again, they were a good quick workout, and it was fun when bitches wore miniskirts.

levelling it out was the whole idea behind the project. they were making it so the tunnel would be wheelchair accessible so people wouldn't have to wheel themselves so far to cross the tracks like everybody's had to do lately.

It's pretty fuckin' sweet, though it seems completely foreign. The bookstore side seems like the stairs are steeper, and the low clearance the leveling created between the Yarbrough/Dabney bridge and the tunnel walkway is a little odd to the eye.

It didn't occur to me that instead of being gold originally, someone had already painted over the 1939 PWA sign.

vinylbandit, one of my friends painted it gold after someone had sprayed red and green all over it.

I’ve still got 1 exam left & graduation, maybe I’ll get to use it once. Watching people on crutches walking around extra long distances in the name of being more accessible to the disabled was fun, but I guess that’s all over now after its late opening. I’m sure it’ll be a dreary sight with the lights, walls, & bricks graffitied, full of fumes, & wet from the rain by the time I see it in person, but I would like to see it one last time before I move away.

i'm willing to bet the paint will wash off the bricks in the rain.

how long will the chemical they treated the bricks with last? how many rains, paints, and wash offs can it handle? can it last 4 and a half years, long enough to get 1 class entirely through without seeing permanently painted bricks? With this project which was already expensive enough, had complications, & opened late I’m not sure that if they had the option of doing it right or doing in the budget that they’d go for doing it right.

can't they just reapply the chemical?

the construction project head said the application (of the chemical) will last 20 years or so, then they would have to apply it again

It won't allow the paint to just wash away. It just makes it's complete removal with a pressure washer gun possible.

it's on the right wall (if you're walking to central campus from the residence halls) in the first half of the tunnel
