Oddly enough, the libertarian sources I read are universally against polygamy they just can't decide how best to fight it. One group seems to think it is a rare exception that begrudgingly needs governmental interference, or if it can be sufficiently eliminated through public ridicule and private condemnation. 5/20/2006 9:41:18 AM |

tell me please, what part of the Libertarian platform would ever indicate a "universal" opposition to polygamy?
hell, Libertarians are probably the only significant 3rd party that actually support NAMBLA.5/20/2006 4:06:44 PM |

By universal I meant that the tiny swath of libertarian writers I have seen discuss the issue were against polygamy. I seriously doubt all libertarians are against it, I just havn't read them talk about it.
As for the suggestion that any libertarians (big "L" or otherwise) would support NAMBLA is utterly rediculous. The only people supporting NAMBLA and other similar organizations.
If by "support" you mean that they'd prefer a system where-by the child's parents hunt down and shoot the NAMBLA member responsible, instead of having a large unaccountable corruptable organization, we'll call it "government," responsible for doing so, then I guess you're right on this one.
But libertarians are very big on the use of violence in response to violence, in this case violence initiated by NAMBLA. 5/20/2006 9:35:47 PM |

Well as a libertarian, I think the question that we have to answer is similar to the gay-marriage issue. Who has the right to define a marriage or a family...the individuals and their churches, or the government?
The go'vt should simply acknowledge marriage contracts as any other contract. As long as everyone is a consenting adult (and human), the government has no business regulating private religious ceremonies and/or private sexual arrangements. Children obviously are not considered consenting adults so they are not legally allowed to get married or engage in sexual activity...so NAMBLA is out. The charge is that Jeffs was arranging sex with children. If true, a special table in Hell is being prepared for his party.
Personally, I don't understand any benefits of polgamy. But poly-families do not transgress any of my rights. So in the words of a soon-to-be-single-again Beatle ... "Let It Be" 5/21/2006 12:51:42 AM |

wow, we really needed more libertarian circle jerks in here.
warren jeffs has ruined the lives of dozens of boys subjected to his communes b/c of his own insanity by ejecting them w/ absolutely no knowledge of the outside world and forcing them to fend for themselves, when they dont even as much as know how to buy things at a store. he's also molested children and has a 2-year old wife. you ideals that you claim to share with the mythical mystical giants that created america might say let it be, but pragmatism says that man should be sent up the creek. 5/21/2006 1:27:52 AM |

warren jeffs is a fucking pox on society. The FLDS complex in el dorado tejas is being prepared to wage a militaristic campaign against the LDS church and has within it's temple complex a cremmatorium established so he can reinstitute blood-atonement. 5/21/2006 1:30:11 AM |

do you even have a single clue about libertarianism? do you have any idea what the "big L" party platform contains, or the historical roots of the modern "little L" philosophy?
or do you just hang out with a bunch of Michigan Militia types who prefer to take their political philosophies ala carte?
Libertarianism, plain and simple, is about only having enough laws to protect life and property, and to support a purely capitalist economy. Any relationships of social, moral, ethical, religious, sexual, or whatever nature one wants to engage in -- when between consenting individuals -- is totally a personal matter, and shall not be subject to any laws.
the pure Libertarian therefore will have no desire to make or enforce any laws prohibiting polygamy, homosexuality, bestiality, S&M, what-the-fuck-ever.
NAMBLA's membership, for your information, is almost 100% Libertarian.
Quote : | "The aim of NAMBLA's small but determined membership was to attack social and legal proscriptions against sexual relations between adults and pubescent or teenage boys. NAMBLA's argument was and remains a libertarian one: age of consent laws are an unnecessary, punitive intervention by government into the lives of its citizens.
