what gets me is the people who are like "so what if bonds takes juice, lots of others do and they aren't hittin the homeruns like him, he has skillz" or "it's not like the juice is addin much to the power, he's doin it with his own skillz"

to them i say: Then why the fuck is he doing them?

^^^The year Babe hit 60, 2nd best was like 29. That's over double 2nd place.

^This is true as well.

Explain how Babe doesn't deserve it again?

He played at fenway park for the beginning of his career. The dimensions for this park were 321 ft. (left), 488 ft. (center), and 314 ft. (right). Notice how he hardly hit any homeruns when he was playing in this park. Then he moved to Polo Grounds until 1922 where the yankees played. This is when he hit the most homeruns of his career. Notice the correlation as the distances here were were 277 in left field, 455 feet in center, and 258 feet in right field. Polo Grounds was a hitter paradise with the exception of centerfield. Noticed when he moved to yankee stadium his numbers slacked off. The measurements at yankee stadium were 295 right, 491 center, 281 left.

Reference http://www.baseball-reference.com/r/ruthba01.shtml for the Babe's stats.

In comparison ATT Park has measurements of 339 left, 421 center, 309 right. These are signficantly longer than what Babe had to play with especially when he was at his peak. Why shouldnt an asterisk be by his name as well? And then there is the fact that only caucasians were allowed to play. Considering caucasians are pretty much outnumbered in todays game and most of the superstars are not caucasian it can be argued that Ruth did not have to face the best possible competition. Pwned.

^ha is that all you have? i know bonds took roids. all im saying is there is something you can say about almost any record, especially babe's. he had so many more advantages than bonds has. no one can says his advantages outweigh babes.

Hammerin' Hank...

oh, i'm glad Bonds did this, now it's out of the way, just one more slew of having to deal with "when will he hit 715???" bs...
i hope he retires at the end of this season with something like 735...

Umm you don't think the balls/equipment have gotten any better over the last 100 years???

I mean come on. Jack Nicklaus in his prime couldn't outhit Tiger Woods with his wood driver compared to Tiger's Nike Sasquatch.

Also Ill bet nobody ever pitched around Babe either since he was the ONLY homerun hitter in his day.

haha you cant talk about being pitched around in relation to Bonds...nice try though. In 2503 games, Babe was walked 2062 times. In Bond's 2730 games hes been walked 2311 times. Thats .82 walks a game for the Babe and .8544 walks a game for Bonds. Research before you post.

I would love to see what Bonds could do against the pitchers of the 1920's...

(And on the flip side, what someone like Ruth could have been in this era of extreme fitness and conditioning)

Didn't the Babe have a big ego?

Wonder if he'd have used roids to get ahead?

Where did I say Babe got pitched around more?

And did you ever see Babe play? How do you know he didnt try to hit everything like Vlad does? I mean the intentional walk has not been around that long.

mercer,

While all of the facts you bring up may be true, I don't see how any of them are remotely relevant to the issue. Regardless of the ballparks, pitchers, whatever, Ruth had no advantage over his competitors other than his talent. Bonds, Maguire, Canseco, Palmero, et al were on performance enhancing drugs. There is a clear difference there. You seem like a pretty intelligent guy (at least you can look up statistics); I would guess you can see the distinction.

To go further, I would agree that all of us, baseball players, reporters, owners, and fans look pretty stupid right now. We loved the Maguire - Sosa chase and were desperate for the great press after the strike. Any reasonable person could see something wasn't normal. To act righteous about it now does seem kind of silly, huh?

^I understand what youre saying. But his competition does matter. What if Bonds never had to face the awesome non-caucasian pitchers hes had to face. I bet he would have had even more homers. Babe only had to worry about the white guys so we never know how he would have performed against the BEST competition. So his competition does matter...if I played against a bunch of little league pitchers Id be knocking them out of the park. He was the best home run hitter ALLOWED to play the game back then...but we dont know someone was better. 70 percent of the guys on the Top 10 All time home run list wouldnt have been allowed to play back then. Bonds was the best then because he wasnt playing any of these guys. Also, dont go by the myth that performance enhancing drugs are a new thing. It is VERY possible that he took them. Im not saying he did but why isnt anyone speculating about that. There was no way of testing back then.

Huh? You think there was actually someone isolating, purifying, and marketing anabolic steroids in the '20s and '30s?

Or are you suggesting that Babe's whiskey and cigars enhanced his hitting?

I think the argument is a bit far-fetched, but it's probably true. There were probably a lot of talented minority players that didn't get a shot because of stuff going on in that time period, but I don't think it's a good point to make in this argument.

BUT, I do think today's talent is much better overall than the talent in Babe's era, so I too wonder how well he'd be hitting now with his poor work-out habits and life-style.

Source?

Best I can find says their properties weren't understood until Nazi experiments in the '30s (and even then not well), and they weren't really used here until the '50s.
