Cingular, verizon may be good...but Cingular runs off of gsm. This means that your whole plan is in a SIM card. If your phone breaks or something, just take the SIM card out and get another phone to put it into. Now, if you have verizon thats a whole new story. They run off of an analog CDMA network. If you break a phone, you have to buy a brand new one from them at retail price (unless you have a good friend who will link your new phone to the network). Besides the SIM card, Cingular ALWAYS has fewer dropped calls in NC. I was college visiting between Greensboro, ECU, and Charlotte and Cingular worked very well. I'm not saying verizon is bad, but Cingular is very good for thier service, price, and roll over minutes deal rather than verizon. Hope that helps.

i have verizon and rarely ever have dropped calls

ive talked to friends who have cingular in NC, and we're always getting disconnected, or they'll say stuff like 'im going into a dead spot, ill call you back'. it's really annoying because it happens almost all the time.

Ive had both, and think verizon is better by far. Noticed way more dropped calls with cingular.

Verizon here, and its great. As far as bitchin about the SIM card, you can still buy any Verizon phone (ebay, whatever) and swap the ESN on your plan if you break your phone. I'm not sure what revonfs360 was tryin to get at in the beginning of the thread.

i've had cingular for a little over a year now, and i haven't had any problems at all. as far as price and minutes, i think they are the best value. i used to have sprint and then alltel, and they both cost more, especially when you go over your minutes. and on the comment on the sim card thing above, they are awesome, there is no fee to get a new phone on the network cause you can do it yourself.

i literally had to walk outside my apt in raleigh and sit in one spot in the backyard to get a signal with cingular. after graduation, i moved to a more rural town in western nc, and getting a signal required driving up the road about a mile from my apt.

i cancelled cingular and got verizon hooked up last october. it's been great - works everywhere in nc (i've been in asheville, raleigh, charlotte) as well as working fine on all business trips (eastern seaboard)

i would stay away from cingular/at&t/suncom

Both Verizon and Cingular have a plan that is $39.99/mth for 450 minutes which is what I'm looking to get. I don't talk much on the phone.. so, I don't need alot of minutes.

I switched from Verizon to Cingular because TennisAngel and her family have them and calls within the network are free. But I have had so many dropped calls with them. It's ridiculous. I can be on I-40 in Orange County and my bars drop to nada. I also went with them because I am very fond of Nokia phones, but once my contract is up in December I don't know if I will be sticking around. Verizon also has a wireless highspeed internet card for like $60.00 a month that looks pretty attractive since all I have is dial up at work.

Wrong wrong and wrong. CDMA is a dual mode network.

If you break a phone and have insurance, you get a new one. If you dont, you buy a new phone. EXACTLY THE SAME WAY EVERY OTHER DAMN PHONE COMPANY WORKS.

Sim cards are only worth a damn if you are going overseas.

Cingular doesn't have 1/10th the coverage in NC that Verizon does. Look at the damn maps.

So basically you are a complete idiot and have no fucking clue what you are talking about.

depends where you live. I have Verizon and when I'm at home most of my conversations include "can you hear me now?". Nothing is more frustrating then the 15 minutes I spent on hold only to have Verizon drop the call... grrrrrrr..... My friend has Cingular and it worked in my apartment so there you go. Of course these questions are statistical, my new apartment has good coverage by Verizon so I'll be less irked with them soon. Frankly, they all suck down here. The deals on cell plans up north are way better. I got roped into a 2 year deal and ddin't really get anything much to speak of. They are selling 2 year old phones here whereas up north you might actually get a $50-100 rebate for taking the junk phone.

I switched to Verizon back in October and freaking love it. My coverage is awesome. If I'm outside or above ground (in a building) I always have a signal.

Verizon by a mile. Shit I just started working for them opening a new office this week. Cingular has absolutely ZERO coverage in northeastern NC where I'm at, whereas Verizon just activated a shit ton of towers down to Wilmington. The only place they don't have their own digital network is between 95 to about Eliz. City, then your on Alltel's digital network, so it doesn't cost any extra, but its not quite as nice as being on Verizon's own towers. They will probably alleviate this problem in the next couple of years, but for now that is the only downside. They have towers in E. City, Ahoskie, M-Boro, but just use Alltel's coverage outside of some of those towns.

As for cost, its the same as Cingular and you have unlimited inCalling and unlimited nights and weekends, just like everybody else.

everyone i know with verizon has intermittent service issues. phone will not ring at all for incoming call, or says roaming/extended area for no reason, or cuts out in the middle of a call. 3 different people, 3 different phones, same exact issue.

i hated cingular last summer during the merger, but now they are just fine. cheapest plans for best service, i dont think you will beat them.

Unless you want anything other than basic service. Then they are the most expensive provider out there, by nearly 20%.

DJ Lauren, My mom had the same problem, it has something to do with the swtiching between Cingular and Sumcom towers - she had to put area codes in before all her numbers.

the only time i've had poor Cingular reception was when i was at the Orlando airport.. I've been in places near Asheville where Cingular was the only provider that worked.

BTW some news about Cingular: 2005, they spent $165mln in the Carolinas alone, which includes 277 new cell sites.. in 2006, they're spending $385mln in the Carolinas, with 342 new cell sites, and 3G tech upgrades in select cities..

I think a lot of the reception problems with Cingular may have to deal with the phone. My phone(S710a) gets full reception almost everywhere I go. Even my Z500 before had the same reception. But I've seen it where I'd get 4-5 bars, and the person next to me would be getting 2.

If they spent that much on their fucking network and the phone still does not work on the second floor of a 2 story house on Greenleaf st then they do not deserve to be business.
