I keep getting shoved more and more into NOC-like development scenarios at work after I built an internal monitoring system for our software systems (it just monitors, archives, and reports specific aspects of our software that no prepackaged system will.. has nothin to do with the network really).
I was asked to look into a wholly encompassing network monitoring solution for this place and while I can google with the best of them I have no experience in this field.. I just keep getting shoved into it.. (i wrote some monitoring applications which tie in to our company's software.. nothing network related.. they just think its all the same i guess) so I could use some suggestions because I am not building this shit from scratch unless necessary.
What I am looking for can be an open-source or a $$$ software system (or even a combo of multiple smaller packages) that will allow at minimum the following:
- Simple testing on HTTP/HTTPS, FTP, and simple ICMP/ping results. This as well as storing data on network traffic usage with archived data and reporting capabilities.. or at least a database system for which I can generate reporting systems off of.
- Email notification on alert/failures with custom thresholds.
Anything else is quite simply a bonus as I have either written, don't need, or already have enough to do everything else I want for now. I know there are a lot of open source projects out there to do much of this stuff.. many are way overly customizable (Nagios) and lean heavily towards the Linux/Unix realm. So given that I just need some basics here with some archiving capabilities within a Windows network.. any suggestions?
I know anyone who does this shit for a living is going to read this and probably get a headache... understandable... hence the reason for my posting this to get pointed in the right direction before diving into an empty pond 5/26/2006 8:49:39 AM |
