for those who care
Quote : | "In the morning of 2006-05-31 the Swedish National Criminal Police showed a search warrant to Rix|Port80 personnell. The warrant was valid for all datacentres of Rix|Port80 and was directed at The Pirate Bay. The allegation was breach of copy-right law, alternatively assisting breach of copy-right law.
The police officers were allowed access to the rack where the TPB servers and other servers are hosted. All servers in the rack were clearly marked as to which sites run on each. The police took down all servers in the rack, including the non-commercial site PiratbyrÄn, the mission of which is to defend the rights of TPB via public debate.
According to police officers simultaneously questioning the president of Rix|Port80, the purpose of the search warrant is to take down TPB in order to secure evidence of the allegations mentioned above.
The necessity for securing technical evidence for the existance of a web-service which is fully official, the legality of which has been under public debate for years and whose principals are public persons giving regular press interviews, could not be explained. Asked for other reasoning behind the choice to take down a site, without knowing wether it is illegal or not, the officers explained that this is normal.
The TPB can receive compensation from the Swedish state in case that the upcoming legal processes show that TPB is indeed legal. " |

it was first posted on slyck.com - it's not dead - they've said it will return - there is nothing on the servers that was breaking the swedish law 5/31/2006 11:59:00 AM |

oh i seriously doubt it will back. thats wishful thinking.
with the clout of the recording industry and to some degree the american government against them, i doubt we'll be seeing tpb again (unless they sell the codebase to someone in some other country like suprnova did) 5/31/2006 12:08:44 PM |

That's the first thing I thought ... what laws in their own country have they broken? I remember getting a good laught out of reading their replies to various technology companies legal threats.

Why are you hating on them? They are will within their rights to prevent their IP from getting stolen, which is, for the most part, what people are doing. It's part of the "game" to get around the raids and stuff. And, as someone said before, when one site goes down, another one fills the gap.5/31/2006 2:17:28 PM |

i love the internet
but wouldn't it suck if the RIAA actually took over The Pirate Bay, reset it up, and every IP address that goes there from now on gets recorded, logged, and monitored? hmmmmm 6/3/2006 2:30:05 PM |
Charybdisjim All American 5486 Posts user info edit post |
Heh yeah, that might have just been my paranoia speaking at first, but that would be a pretty good way of finding IP's to monitor and prosecute... 6/3/2006 2:34:20 PM |

... here are some reasons why TPB is down sometimes - and how long it usually takes to fix:
Tiamo gets *very* drunk and then something crashes: 4 days
Anakata gets a really bad cold and noone is around: 7 days
The US and Swedish gov. forces the police to steal our servers: 3 days
