I wanna run video from my computer to my tv real time. Theres an output I believe for an S-Video on the back of the tower (Dell Dimension E510). I've googled it and can't find anything substantial to help me out. If I do need an S Video, what's the best place/price to get one? And does anyone have any knowledge of how to actually do this on my desktop, I don't think I need any extra software? And do I need an HD Tv to get the resolution.

you should be able to just plug an s-video cable (available at radio shack, etc) from the video card on your computer into one of the video in inputs on your tv

then you might have to go into your display settings on your computer and set it to that monitor

yes you need an hdtv to get see an hd quality picture on your tv

s-video cables are EXPENSIVE i bought a 25ft one for my computer to tv and it was like $50 so dont go to best buy they fucking suck.
all i did was connect my vid card to my tv
go into my vid cards program and force it to detect the TV and i could bring the resolution up to the max my comp supports 10somethingx785 or whatever and it looks great
i can use it as a second monitor it i wanted to as well!

If you're expecting HD quality video through the s-video cable you're going to be pretty dissapointed. Unless this is actuall an HDTV (in which case it'll have a DVI input if it's not just got a crappy selection of inputs) you're not going to be able to get resolution much above 640x480 or so.

^ I got a 25 ft one from the bookstore for about 13 bucks. Online is the best place though for cables though.

Yea my tv is a sony flat screen about 4 years old, it's not HDTV, so I guess it would be pointless to try this, but thanks for the responses

Just look at the inputs on your TV. If any of them say "S-video" then it's pretty simple. If none of them are S-video, then it's pretty impossible, unless you got some kind of S-Video to RCA converter, but I've never heard of that.

you should be able to output 1024x768 through an svideo connection to a tv.. now text will look like crap since it's an interlaced image, but videos and dvds playing on your desktop will look nice on the TV.

most video cards with svideo connections will have the svideo to RCA adapter/cable, but the adapter is available at Radioshack.

once you have it hooked up, you may need to goto your video settings and enable the TV-out (you should be able ot find it under the advanced options in the settings tab)

^ The tv will still only be displaying 640x480 or 720x576, despite what you set your computre to output. It will merely downsample it. Unless it's an HDTV it's not going to actually display the full screen equivalent of 720p.
