The thing about the holodeck I found absurd was that everyone seemed obsessed with interacting with characters from novels and such.
It would have been used for holo-sex, and nothing else. 6/2/2006 2:08:58 PM |

I never understood how they were able to walk "beyond" the bounds of the actual room they were in. Like if there were holographically "outside" how could they move around without hitting the walls of the room?
Oh yeah and it would be used for a lot of sex too. 6/2/2006 2:11:48 PM |

But the Sherlock Holmes TNG episodes were adorable.
Oh, and I actually think they had "erotic programs" in DS9 or something.

yeah, that's pretty much the poitn behind Quark's "Holo-Suites"... if not expressly stated then it was aluded to many times throughout DS9...
much more realistic use of the holo-technology...
although inserting oneself into James Bondesque adventures was a pretty sweet idea too...
Sidenote: Babylon 5 had holo-brothels, not the same thing, involved wearing a suite and having a VR display, but similar concept...

they were never really on the physical 'floor' as the entire environment is 'created' via force fields and holography...
so...
when they move, like a treadmill the 'environment' moves around them... for multiple people the environment 'compacts' in the non visible space between them...6/2/2006 7:34:06 PM |

the sherlock holmes episodes were some of the worst. any holodeck episode is crappy, and I agree with the thesis.
To be fair, I think they always implied that people were having mad holosex. There were plenty of times guys were running programs with hot chicks in bikinis in the show. 6/2/2006 7:42:52 PM |

as has already been said, the ground they are on is moved under their feet, so their locations are fairly static...
it gets hairy when there is a big group of people in the holodeck, and they spread out... the way i imagine it happens is that each person gets their own "treadmill" and they have virtual holo-walls projected between them, so they just appear farther away from the other people than they really are.
now, the reason why people can appear wet, and why people can sometimes take items out of the holodeck (such as the piece of paper data carries out in the first sherlock holmes episode) is because the holodeck uses both holoprojection and force fields, as well as replication for items in the program that are likely to be handled by the users.6/3/2006 1:41:23 AM |

wasn't the whole thing with this episode was that they were in the holodeck the whole time? Moriarty tricked them into thinking they were leaving the holodeck when they were still in the until then end?6/3/2006 4:16:46 AM |

no, not everything. some things are created with holography, and force fields to simulate touch.
^^and no, that's in the second Moriarty episode.

yeah, that's the second one... i think it's the STar Trek: TNG Technical Manual where they try to solve the whole "being wet off hte holodeck" thign with replication... which only partically works, because Moriarty threw a book off the holodeck, but then, that was after he'd trapped the captain, data, and barclay, so it disappearing might have been his mistake and should have been their first clue that something was up...

TVs probably DO malfunction as much as holodecks (probably more), it's just that the scope of things that could be messed up by a TV is much smaller.
I think it's kind of funny/odd though that they have accidentally created so many AIs in Star Trek that have emotions, but they still can't give Data emotions. 6/3/2006 3:55:19 PM |

When everyone went back to Sherwood Forest in one of the Q episodes, were they in the Holodeck or did Q transport them to Sherwood Forest?
You mean, "died" with quotation marks
