From the Lexington, KY paper:
Kentucky should know by this weekend whether it will add New Jersey Player of the Year Dan Werner to this year's recruiting haul.
Werner, a 6-foot-8 forward with perimeter skills, has made UK one of his four final college choices. The other three are Florida, Pittsburgh and Rutgers.
Schools eliminated from Werner's list were North Carolina State, Seton Hall, Notre Dame and Saint Joseph's.
Werner originally signed with N.C. State. After Coach Herb Sendek left the school this spring, the player decided to reopen his recruitment.
Werner planned to get away with his family the rest of this week to think about the college choice, said Ed Wicelinski, who coached the player at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, N.J.
Werner, whom the Prep Stars recruiting service rated No. 84 nationally in its most recent analysis, would seem to fill the need at forward that UK has tried repeatedly to fill. Earlier this recruiting year, the Cats pursued such forwards as Brandan Wright, Thaddeus Young, Deon Thompson, Darrell Arthur and Damion James.
Werner scored about 1,400 points and grabbed 800 rebounds in his high school career, Wicelinski said. 6/15/2006 7:54:34 AM |

I don't really call facts, excuses. The kid wanted to come play in Herbies system. It isn't like NCSU is enough of a legend for anyone to come here regardless of coach. Just because you are a Herb pumper, doesn't mean you have to be an idiot.6/15/2006 10:56:15 AM |

I guess we'll have to wait about 3 or 4 years before that happens.
And the "view" that Werner was the highest rated recruit we had coming in won't change. If he goes on to suck wherever he ends up...then so be it. But he wasn't a system player like so many on here mentioned. He was being heavily recruited by Florida and Kentucky, who don't run anything like Herb ran here.
We could have used him. We won't get him now. Lets move on....but don't make dumb statements like it isn't a big deal. 6/15/2006 3:22:21 PM |

florida and kentucky didn't even start recruiting him until the sendek saga opened up werner's recruitment, i think he chose State over st. joes at the time. he was a "diamond in the rough" until his senior school season.

My view isn't going to change one bit. If it means going 5 years of mediocrity for us to get past the sweet 16, or beat our rivals, or make NCSU bball a product I get exicted about, then it needs to be done.
I would have been perfectly happy to keep Herb assuming 1 of 2 things changed in his program
1) We compete with our rivals consistently, and at the very least compete with them while losing 2) Have an offense that is more entertaining.
Why do you think Chuck's head hasn't been on more of a pole than it should be based on records? Because he manages to pull out wins over FSU, takes VT and OSU to the wire, and is known to run an exciting offense. Yes, in time if he doesn't produce better records then we will tire of this too (especially if we keep losing to UNC). But with Herb, it became pretty apparent that we weren't going past the 16, or going to compete with our rivals consistently, or not run dumbass plays at the end of regulation, or several other things that were endemic in his program.6/15/2006 4:17:36 PM |

Have you been to a football game in 3 years?
The Stone running QB draws and Jay Davis 3rd and 10 screen passes offenses were NOT entertaining.

I think the 3 first round picks we just had were a bigger part of that than Reggie Herring. He really tore it up at Arkansas.
Quote : | "I hope Trestman was a good hire. I thought it was at the time, but I have to say I was a little disappointed in the QB play last year" |
The only reason I hold out hope is becuase when he was at U of Miami his 2 quarterbacks were Bernie Kosar and Vinny Testaverde. I believe he also recruited Steve Walsh.
Maybe Stone just isn't the type of QB Trestman would like for his system. I'll wait until he gets his guys in here (Burke) for a few years and see what happens.
I think Chuck's done a decent job and underachieved... but he's underachieved becuase of only having 1 side of the ball. Rivers' offenses were great and post-Rivers defenses were great.
I have no problem giving him a little more time to put it all together. He's proven he has a great eye for talent, can develop players, and he can at least put together a solid O and D (just not at the same time)
That said, there's still a lot of questions with him

Now tell me where in your mind how you managed to connect that I said anything about the offense being exciting to watch last year? Does reading trip you up? Does it fail you? When you see these letters on the screen, once they hit your retina, does your brain say "hell no, I'm not processing any thoughts today, go directly to the colon?" Fucking hell, I don't know why I bother to respond.
