Official site: http://www.thepropositionfilm.com/ IMDB: http://imdb.com/title/tt0421238/ Trailers: http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/theproposition/
Rural Australia in the late nineteenth century: Capt. Stanley and his men capture two of the four Burns brothers, Charlie and Mike. Their gang is held responsible for attacking the Hopkins farm, raping pregnant Mrs. Hopkins and murdering the whole family. Arthur Burns, the eldest brother and the gang's mastermind, remains at large has and has retreated to a mountain hideout. Capt. Stanley's proposition to Charlie is to gain pardon and - more importantly - save his beloved younger brother Mike from the gallows by finding and killing Arthur within nine days.
I haven't seen this yet, but it's supposed to be fucking GUTTER. It's basically a western, written by Nick Cave (the musician), and it takes place in the Australian outback. Guy Pearce (Memento, L.A. Confidential) stars as Charlie Burns, the aforementioned family-murdering rapist. If you're not interested yet, watch the trailer. I don't see how this could get any better without involving Lee Van Cleef. I'll post thoughts after I watch it tonight.
Opening Friday at Galaxy Cinema. Showtimes are 1:45, 4:15, 7:10, and 9:25. Student tickets are $5.50. See it!

When it comes to movies like this, yes.
Perhaps I should have said "gritty", or "brutal". But neither one of those seemed sufficient. 6/15/2006 12:39:13 PM |

"A near-masterpiece of mood and menace, and one that deserves to be seen on the largest screen possible." -- Ty Burr, BOSTON GLOBE
"Hillcoat creates a vision as nihilistic as any horror film ever put on a screen, but so well acted and carefully conceived that it transcends exploitation." -- Colin Covert, MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE 6/15/2006 1:57:14 PM |

I was quite dissapointed by this one, but maybe I just had too high of expectations
I had a hard time finding a plot in this movie; perfect style, great cast, violence as promised, but it seems like it's missing a lot 6/18/2006 9:33:03 PM |

John Hillcoat, director of The Proposition, is set to direct the film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's The Road, the prospect of which gives me a big boner. 6/21/2007 11:16:41 PM |

I fucking LOVE this movie, btw.
^^^how was the plot hard to find?? I thought it was more or less a recycled plot...just different setting, and outstanding acting.

^^ I don't see how that could even be a remotely interesting movie, though. Especially with how it ends. 6/22/2007 12:38:36 AM |

The thing I liked the most about it was how it was written. That just wouldn't come through on screen, I don't think. 6/22/2007 12:50:21 AM |
