Quote : | "His NBA season is over, his college degree is in hand and Sidney Lowe is ready to get started as N.C. State’s basketball coach. At least, in 15 days when he will officially be the successor to Herb Sendek.
For now, unofficially, he’s still studying for his NCAA rules test and familiarizing himself with his current roster, and future prospects.
Lowe met with the media this afternoon, covering some of the lingering questions from his hiring back on May 6.
Among the highlights:
— Recruit/commitment Larry Davis has not been given a release to go to Seton Hall. Davis committed to State but changed his mind with the coaching change.
The 6-3 shooting guard has since announced his intentions to play for Seton Hall.
Lowe didn’t expound on his plans to give Hall a release from his letter of intent — which would allow him to play in the 2006-07 season without sitting out a year as a transfer — only saying he has not been given a release.
“I don’t even want to discuss that,” Lowe said.
As for Davis’ fellow recruit/commitment Dan Werner, Lowe said the 6-7 forward still could play for State next season.
“He wants to relax and get away from it and think about things for a little bit,” Lowe said. “Then we’ll discuss it and hopefully come up with an agreement that everyone is comfortable with.”
With Davis’ change in plans, and Cedric Simmons departure to the NBA, the Pack has two available scholarships — three if Werner also opts out — but Lowe said he would eat the scholarships, instead of trying to find an uncommitted high school senior or junior college player.
“We want to make sure we keep in standard for what N.C. State is all about,” Lowe said. “Sometimes you have to take chances as opposed to making a quick decision and it being the wrong decision." |
