Somebody on NPR this morning proposed that Cars was the "beginning of the end" for Pixar. They make one mediocre movie and it's the end of studio that single-handedly pulled Disney out of the red? Damned skittish liberal media. 6/16/2006 2:22:06 PM |

I don't think Cars will do that well. It looks pretty lame to me. But I suppose that their target market is 5-7 year olds who think that a slinky is the pinnicle of entertainment. So I guess you never know. 6/16/2006 2:42:45 PM |

this is the first shitty movie pixar has made
i'm not kidding, it's AWFUL
the jokes are stupid, the love story is gay, the supporting characters aren't funny and are really bad/obvious stereotypes
it's a shame that the people that made the incredibles and toy story have to put their name on this 6/16/2006 4:42:08 PM |

i dont know about you but aside from toy story, shrek 1, and ants(best one) these cgi movies really suck, the jokes are just too cute and just dont work for me i prefer regular animation 6/16/2006 5:00:30 PM |

Toy Story 1 & 2, Monsters, Incredibles, and Nemo are all great (Shrek 1 is close, too). All the other ones just rely on pop-culture gags and too many big-name voices. (haven't seen Cars yet) 6/16/2006 10:58:20 PM |

That's funny, I thought the ants in Antz were the most poorly constructed characters in any CGI movies.

i haven't seen it yet, mostly because I don't want any portion of money I pay for a ticket to support any part of Larry the Cable Guy's wealth, persona, act, whatever...
but, is it true that Cars is apart from the mold of Pixar movies by having no "real world" in which the story of the title characters take place?
like... what if: toys talked but avoided humans knowing they did fish talked and had to survive and live around humans monsters were real and scared human kids bugs could talk, and humans tried to stomp them sometimes
but in cars, its just cars hopping around, going to see races of other cars? seems.... less magical in concept. 7/2/2006 1:42:05 AM |

^ 1. No, it's not in "human" world 2. It is, indeed, "magical" because you see car equivalents of what humans would do. 3. Quit PMS-ing about the most stupid shit in a movie you've never seen. 7/2/2006 1:54:35 AM |

I think the biggest letdown was the characters. Every one of Pixar's previous movies has interesting and complex characters. Cars was a collection of one-dimensional stereotypes. All the cars in the town can be described in one word. You have the hippie, the redneck, the Mexican, the Italian, ect.
Part of the blame lies with the voice actors. Nowadays it's the hot trend to pack animated movies with celebrity voices. So far, Pixar has done a good job of choosing celebrities who have voice acting talent. But Owen Wilson? The character of Lightning is already pretty boring - you know, a young hotshot learns some unsuprising life lessons. And Owen Wilson doesn't do a thing to make the character more interesting. He's just reading lines.
I did like the cameo by the Car Talk brothers. Their thirty seconds of banter was more engaging than the entire rest of the movie. ] 7/2/2006 12:37:12 PM |

I really don't know what the motivation was for this movie. Maybe they sold more toys for Cars than they did some of the other Pixar movies. I guess it's no coincidence that the last two movies they've released are probably their only franchises that drive toy sales. They must be making bank, otherwise I can't imagine why Cars needed a sequel.
This one just doesn't have any draw for me, even with good reviews and it doesn't even have that. I might watch this if this comes on one of the networks because some other station is running some lame celebrity award show.
