so is there a catch with these ing direct savings accounts? 4.25% on a savings account seems too good to be true

yup, it is strictly online. So they don't have to pay for all hte buildings and shit and its a lot cheaper for them to do business.

They only allow your initial deposit to be from a mailed check. Everything after that is online. So you have to have an account at a bank where you can deposit the money and then transfer it to the ing account.

It's great . . . my old savings account didn't earn me hardly any interest. I've made like $20 having an account for only a month or so.

my initial deposit was not from a mailed check... it was straight from my checking account online.

there are a few other online savings accounts online that offer higher than ING's rate. but i like INGs website and setup a little bit better than some others.

Not so. You can start out with an EFT.

what I was saying came out wrong. I meant that if you want to put money into the account by sending in a check, they will only do that for the initial deposit. Your initial can be online, but everything after that has to be online.

My savings account with BB&T was only earning like .25 %

A laptop containing the Social Security identification numbers and other personal data of 13,000 employees and former employees of the city of Washington, DC, has been stolen.

thats a very good question sir. I know they are FDIC insured, but I think that just covers your money if the bank goes under.

I don't see a direct answer on the website either.

Are you talking along the lines of someone accessing your account and just taking the money from the account, or are you talking about them getting your info from the site and running up a bunch of credit on your SSN?

just to clarify - ING is not "just another online bank". It is a huge company based in The Netherlands. The ING Group was formed in 1991 from a big merger of other financial companies dating back to the 1840s. In The Netherlands and other parts of Europe, they are a traditional "bricks and morter" company with buildings and offices and local branches and whatnot.
http://www.ing.com/group/showdoc.jsp?docid=074177_EN

I was in Amsterdam over the weekend, and ING advertisements are everywhere and the occasional bank or building (though not as much as other Dutch banks, like Rabobank)

ING DIRECT and ING DIRECT USA are smaller subsidiaries that offer online and telephone access to banks, but they are still backed by the much larger ING Group.

Just use SECU, and if you can't, get a temp job any any ncsu department for 2 days and get one.

Then open a money market account. %4.75 right now.

HSBC, Citibank, and emigrantdirect offer a better interest rate right now.

but the interface at Emigrant is so dreadful it's worth the lower interest rate to go ING.

and I have referrals, too.
I'm cooler than most of these other schmucks, so use mine.

^ what can you do on the ING site that you can't on the ED site?

It's not pretty, but it works exactly the same. I would hardly say that the 5 minutes per month I will spend looking at the site is worth PAYING for... ED has always been very prompt w/transfers and such too.

my money is with citi right now. free $200!!

bullshit.... the new ED website is on par with ING's in terms of looks, functionality, ease of use, navigation, etc. i actually like it better than ING's website now. it's cleaner without all that stupid flash shit. it's worth the extra 0.8% to go with Emigrant now.

open up an ING to get the $25/$10 then move it somewhere that pays a higher %.

I'm gonna cause another mini riot on here - I'm about to open an account. Since I want to do it this afternoon, I'm not trying to find people previously on the thread. First one who sends me a PM will get the referral.

And we have a winner. ShawnaC123 is the winner by 3 minutes.
