Apparently the small Target Stores by university campuses and in the middle of cities w/o parking are a thing. At first they were dubbed TargetExpress and CityTarget, but have since all been re-branded to just Target. The first one opened across the street from the University of Minnesota. It covers a space of only about 20,000 square-feet, which I believe is about the size of the Alley. So this could actually be a thing happening.

The last I heard was someone confirming that Target was in talks with the building owner, but that nothing had been finalized.

That building would need so many TI for Target, if Target moves in it would have to be basically a complete demo and rebuild

I'm gonna guess you aren't an engineer and not qualified to make that statement.

The framework is good.

Imagine all the basic white girls that will be going in there.

i've never done anything with target or wal-mart or similar, but just judging from the requirements for other national retailers i can't see that building working unless it's a complete gut at the very least.

Neither property has been sold recently (1963 and 2014), and they're owned by two different entities (B&F Properties and Hillsborough Lofts, LLC).

Hillsborough Lofts is all wrapped up in liens, I doubt it gets sold anytime soon.

I wish they'd do something with that place. They have to be losing a ton of money to have had a crane sitting over top of the site for like a year now without any movement on the property, right?

Ate at H-Street Kitchen on Saturday. Place looked really cool. Drinks were above average and the food was good. We will probably be back.

Just had H-Street for lunch. The food was awesome. I had the cheese fries / poutine appetizer they had and it was really interesting - kind of like pot roast on top of fries with really stringy cheese. Also had the turkey and country ham sandwich, which was on really nice bread too. Lunch for two with appetizers and waters for drinks was $30 before taxes.

I loved what they did with the inside. I hope it sticks around and I think it will if they offer a student discount on food and/or a cheaper late night menu. I don't think students can hang with the price point they're asking for on their dinner menu. Also some more TVs would be nice to make it more of a viable sports bar option.

J&J Automotive at the corner of Hillsborough and Bagwell to be replaced by a 5 story apartment building. From the same people that brought you the gem at 105 Friendly.

Why is New City getting every one of these projects and cranking out shit?

Also, went to H Street a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed it. Will be back.

Just went up in the building across from Winston (used to by Sylvia's Pizza / Hotbox Pizza). Pretty cool space. Will have retail on the bottom two floors, a couple floors of residential, and then a rooftop deck. There's gonna be some sort of bar/restaurant there but I'm not sure what exactly yet.

I know we've posted this before, but I'm gonna put it back here since we're talking about this spot and "shiny new retail."

My fraternity house was at the end of Maiden. Developers have been trying to buy up those properties for the last 2-3 years. Good to see that shit finally happened. Those houses were gross.

Seriously, does anyone think that a Target could survive there without parking? I understand the amount of students right across the street. Maybe some errands in between or after clasess but I just don't see how it would survive.

I don't know how the K-Mart on Western and Blue Ridge survives and it has plenty of parking

Big City Targets have 0 Parking. Enough population density in an walkable area will keep the store busy.

yea I thought for sure when I was a freshman that would be bought out by walmart or even a target, that K-mart doesn't even keep essential dorm stuff in stock like you think a manager near a campus would.

The big giant target logo is a bit over the top IMO but beyond that I think it's a definite improvement.

Also, there's already a CVS not half a mile up the street in Stanhope (which is open 24 hours - which I doubt this Target will be.) What's going to happen with that?

The best case scenario: The CVS at Stanhope closes and is replaced by a grocer such as Aldi or Trader Joe's, either of which would be just the right size for that space.
Maybe worst case scenario: They both stay open and just compete with each other. Margins suffer due to the competition and therefore the stores start to fall into disrepair.

I still say that there isn't enough parking to sustain a Target even if it is a smaller version.

This is a student version of Target. Convenient walking distance for customers. So parking is not necessary.

^^ there is a parking lot literally under the bowling alley Target. There are also plenty of people in Cameron Park and the surrounding area, outside of the students, to provide traffic for that store. There are plenty of places over there that have been running for a while and don't rely large parking lots.

Supposedly the owner of PR is buying the building. The purchase is supposed to be complete on December 15th.

The rumor, of course, is that Target is taking over the building that houses The Alley ... Are you for it or against it?

The last thing I saw on television was Target had no plans to open anywhere in Raleigh. But I think it would be horrible, just horrible. That would be terrible for the street. If it was down Hillsborough Street toward the Fairgrounds, I could understand it. But right in the heart of Hillsborough Street, putting a Target in? Horrible idea.

I saw people on television saying, “It would be great here, because the closest one right now is five or ten minutes away.” What is five or ten minutes? Do you need one on every corner? If you have to have a Target five or ten minutes away from your house, and that’s what’s important to you, that’s a pretty sad way to live your life. "

I know he probably said this before he realized it was a student-sized Target, but lol

So evidently Gus Gusler is trying to redevelop the entire area around the PR now. Anyone know more about this? I'm assuming the PR and David's stay where they are but I'm not sure where this proposed project will sit exactly...
