I would like to install Vista but have a few questions about making a partition to install it on. Right now I have a 68.68GB partition with 18GB of free space and only 5.87GB of unallocated space. I need 15GB for Vista.

Can i repartition the 68.68GB partition and make a 15GB partition on the free space or do I have to reformat and start over from the beginning. I have only ever made a partition in the beginning and didn't know if it was possible to repartition an already partitioned space.

Download GParted LiveCD. It contains a partioning tool which can resize as needed.

^ you download the CD and burn it, its a CD bootable version of linux with the tools you'll need to partition your hard drive, it doesnt matter that you're running XP as your main OS

it sounds like you're going to be treading some dangerous ground if you try this though, I'd pass on Vista

I don't want to reformat because I don't want to take the time, not because I am afraid of losing anything.

If I mess something up and have to start over I won't lose anything on this machine.

Vista comes with "Windows Boot Manager". You can configure it in Vista (change the default OS, the # of seconds before automatic boot). you cant edit the name of the entries though. When you come to the boot menu, you'll see:

Where the first is XP, the second is Vista. I installed Vista behind my Linux partition on a secondary hard drive. I choose Windows Boot Manager from the GRUB menu, and then pick the windows version i want to load.

i partition my drive using PartitionMagic...installed it pretty easy. now i sorta want to erase the partition since i just wanted to try it out. will it still ask me in the beginning to choose which operating system to boot up if i erase the partition?

Umm...what I listed will do exactly what you need it to do. Did you even bother to Google it?

Well i just got my Vista DVD in the mail so im gonna try out partition magic.

The Gpart thing looked cool but I haven't done anything with linux in years.
