The only thing worse than Greatest Hits CD's are the ones with one/two new songs on them.

*the only acceptable ones are from artists whose albums are hard to find. i.e. artists from before 1970. 7/2/2006 3:05:58 PM |

I respectfully disagree for the most part. A lot of the time Greatest Hits cd's have all singles and popular songs, which are not always the best songs. But for some artists they work. 7/2/2006 3:20:29 PM |

^ sometimes theyre the only cd's worth buying, taking the good songs and making it worth the $15+, if you buy, instead of buying 3 or 4 mediocre cd's for the 5 songs that you actually like 7/2/2006 3:39:04 PM |

I really dont have a problem with greatest hits cds, however, there should be one rule: The band most either be broken up or most of the key members of the band are gone. 7/2/2006 3:49:46 PM |

Yeah, it definitely depends on the artist. For example, I bought a "best-of" CD of Daniel Johnston's music, and I would bet my life it's better (and a lot cheaper) than trying to wade through his entire catalogue (much of which is hard to find) and try to find the best material. If you're using it as an introduction to a somewhat obscure artist with a huge, intimidating catalogue, I don't think it's such a bad idea. 7/2/2006 3:51:24 PM |

i have a rule about buying cds
i have to like at least 2 or 3 of the songs on the album before buying it
when that happens i usually like some of the other songs
if i buy an album with only one song i've heard of, I generally don't like the rest of the cd and i've just wasted my money
greatest hit albums usually fall into the 1st category for me 7/2/2006 4:17:24 PM |

I agree. Especially if the artist has evolved over time. A greatest hits cd can help you find where you should start in the artists catalog based on what you like on the greatest hits.7/2/2006 4:34:13 PM |

I hate it when "artists" who have only released two or three albums release greatest hits albums. I think you need to have at least 5 albums before even considering a greatest hits album. 7/3/2006 2:47:21 AM |

Good for casual fans.
Example: I like Lynyrd Skynyrd, but I'm not a huge fan. So I own the Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd double album. 7/3/2006 12:47:43 PM |

my problem with this scenario is that usually the best songs on a CD aren't the "greatest hits"7/3/2006 12:49:24 PM |
